Re: Help!! Not invaded but can\'t reply

For awhile, I used a couple of the anti-spyware and ad blocking programs recommended by our members, but I finally dumped them when I re-formatted the hard drive and just use Norton SystemWorks 2004 now. It seems to be doing as good a job and with less effort.

Bird, I don't think System Works will block Spyware. I think you need to buy their internet security software for that protection.

Download Spybot version 1.3 and run it. I bet you will find lots of spyware on your PC. DoubleClick will be on there for sure.

Re: Help!! Not invaded but can\'t reply

I have spybot, and recently set it up to monitor, when I first turned on the computer after this, I got 5 "messages", I denied each. I can still view and reply to messages, but dont see the adds any longer.

Re: Help!! Not invaded but can\'t reply

DannyD.. I can still see the the Ads and as of yesterday afternoon I can see the posts also. Make sure you are using the latest version of Spybot (v 1.3). I have a customer that was using v 1.2 and it did not block some of DoubleClick and Avenue A spyware. Spyware is the same as viruses, the originators keep changing their profile so that they cannot be detected.

( It may be annoying, but it appears that the folks at Deere have figured out they will reach more people at www.tractorbynet.com than they will at www.deere.com

Not everyone here likes the annoying ads, but everyone here likes the free site! Sometimes you can't have one without the other! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif )

I guess I can handle the ads as long as TBN is free. There is a lot of free information here for all of us. Did I say free, yes it is free and if the creators of TBN can make some money I think it is great.

Murph,
I doubt if they're making millions on this site, but if the ads will keep the best internet tractor resource free for everyone (not just members), I'll put up with them.
BTW I have just conditioned myself to overlook the JD ad, but that's me. I do run Adaware and spybot every so often and spybot does eliminate the current double click cookie.

Re: Help!! Not invaded but can\'t reply

While in an ideal world no one would ever have to pay for servers or bandwidth or computers, those are realities of running any site. Especially one that's as popular as TractorByNet. I dislike intrustive and annoying ads as much as the next person, and I despise popups and am a huge privacy advocate.

But with that said, I still believe there are times when some things are harmless. DoubleClick is hardly what I'd call a 'spyware' company. Though they certainly track more information than a lot of websites, they do allow an opt-out method. If you cannot get the opt-out to work, that's unfortunate, but not something we have control over. What I understand Doubleclick does is merely track users who view their banners. So they might see that I view their banners here on TBN and also on MSNBC.com, or other sites. Some people don't want ANY sort of tracking like that, and I delete Doubleclick cookies when I remember, but I also don't view it as bad as what most spyware companies do: tracking each website you visit from special software with hidden code.

Muhammad locked the other thread (only he and I can lock threads) because when a solution is presented, that's basically it. Getting into the details of whether or not something is ethical or "good business" is not what any forum on TBN is for, so I thought he did the right thing.

So hopefully the viewing experience isn't too bad for most of you, I know I have no problem with formatting on either my home or work computer, and the smaller monitor one is 1024x768 resolution.

Jerry,

I doubt they could ever make millions also. That is why I said "some". You know, enough to maybe take your wife out for supper once!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and a drive to keep TBN going /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Help!! Not invaded but can\'t reply

John, thanks for the information on Spybot. I had Adaware but hadn't used it in a while, seemed to be more of a pain to use

I use eTrust PestPatrol. It runs all the time and does automatic updates. Works well and invisibly.
