Wife wants to build a new pantry. She wants the doors to be able to slide in to tuck them (mostly) out of the way if she wants. I've not found something that strikes me as the correct item for a full sized door (18x96" she's using two of them for a 36" opening)

Here's a website to give a flavor of what I'm looking for.

Pivot Door Slides & Pivot Door Hardware | Woodworker's Hardware

The hardware can be floor (and wall) mounted verses "wall/wall" that you might see for an entertainment center.

Any thoughts on what hardware to use would be appreciated!!!

Had a set of these on some custom cabinets that housed a TV. They were about 1/3 the size you are trying to pull off. They were terrible! I won’t be doing that again! Time to ask her to show you what she wants.....in person. I think both of you will find the idea is better than the reality.

For that sized opening how about a pocket door?

not sure I'm following what you are trying to do....are we talking cabinetry type pantry or 2x4 wall construction?......8' high door is really tall for a pantry and can get quite unwieldy.......Jack

If you put something like that on a pantry, you're going to lose the ability to store anything along the full width of the cabinet since the doors will take up the space along the side walls.

What about bi-fold doors?

Sorry late getting back, been at work.

She's (we are) building a pantry about 48" wide. We have 9' ceilings so she likes the idea of using floor to ceiling. Now she can "store" some of her items up high instead of in basement above washer/dryer. (food warmer type things)

We have a cabinet that probably once held a TV. Doors open, then slide out of the way.

Why does she want this?

(do you really think I have a clue?!! :pullinghair:

She likes the idea of getting the doors out of the way (then why not just close them when you're done in there?!)

We are aware that you will lose "X" amount of space, approaching let's say 12" between the two sides. That still gives her a 36" pantry that will go up to 9' in height.

i'm not personally into it.... but... trying to help her make her vision come true.

We'll be building this ourselves, typical 2x4 construction although some of the 2x4's might be turned 90 degrees to minimize the loss of the sideways space.

Side comment: we're capable of building it, done most of the house. She's not afraid to rip out a drywall section in a heartbeat to do something in the wall, then fix it all back (and you will never know she did it, she's good at fixing!)

I have never seen such a large "pivoting / sliding" hinge...so thought I'd ask.

ok I see what you're trying to do now......I've seen that done with 4' high panels but never 8'......I think you would be asking to much out of cabinet hardware for an 8' panel......just wouldn't hold up to regular use......only thing I can think of is to stop in a commercial door supplier and see if they know of anything......it definitely would be a high end specialty item that might be used in schools or churches......Jack

I think I have her currently swayed to making them traditional doors. She wanted (wants) the ability to slide doors away and show off her "coffee station" (she's got a very nice coffee/espresso thing... I think it's Jura or something like that) Anyway while in making coffee mode, she'd like the doors out of the way.

Though I "get that", still..... all that hardware, loss of space.... just to tuck the doors away?

So right now, she's rethinking it so she can gain the closet space back. (after all, why have it if you're going to lose a bunch to hide the door??)

No idea how this will turn out. We're currently replacing some of the 8" T&G that is on the ceiling. Let me tell you....cutting around can-lights is a real pain in the neck. I let her cut it today and this last board (which has cuts on both sides to start wrapping around two separate lights) seems has been cut about 1/4" too deep, letting the hole show (the bezel doesn't look like it's going to cover it)

So I'm on the hunt for larger bezels or we're going to have to replace the board.

If you have 48", how about a pair of 12" pocket doors, giving you a 24" doorway? Much simpler hardware.

She's already got the doors, I think they're 18"

I DO think she's about ready to just mount them as normal doors and give up on some of the fancy movement of them. I'm trying to get her to answer the question, what's the use in building a pantry for storage and then using (losing) about 20% of your space just for door movement?

She's been so set with this vision of hers, I feel like I'm beating her up asking this.... (she comes up with ideas that aren't always on the practical side of things and unless I get HER to see that, she'll never change her gears)

We got most of the T&G ceiling installed today. Last piece was a doozy (for us anyway) about 13 1/2' long but, it had two circular cutouts on one side to get fitted around some recessed can lights.... and another circular cutout on the other side for yet a third can light.

Having recently come out of a cast from breaking my arm at the shoulder, it's been doubly difficult as I can't yet reach my arm over head, can't lift much weight, can't do many things right now until I get the range of motion of my arm back.

(broke Humerus in two, right below the shoulder socket so any lifting of my arm puts all the weight of the arm right on the break, making it difficult)

It was a fun fall...
