Although I rarely I agree with Chris, on this one I have to.

It is not safe and it would be rough on your fourrunner.

The V8 version is rated for 7000 pounds. The V6 has 236HP/266TQ and the V8 has 260HP/306TQ. My guess is that they down graded the tow capacity on the V6 due to transmission limitations. If you break the transmission it will much more expensive than letting the dealer haul it.

V6, and I hear you guys...
Do want it - don't need it, nor the expenses related to it.
Wanted to get help keeping me from doing something foolish.
Case closed!

OK, I'll make ya feel a bit better about your situation......I have a 98 4runner (3500 tow I believe) with the factory 2" receiver/tow package. I've got a bit less HP (only 190) and perhaps the rear isn't built as stiff.....but......
Moved last year from MI to OH. Used the big truck with big trailers to move all the big stuff. CAUTIOUSLY used the 4runner with my small 7X12 enclosed to move mostly clothes & household items.....total weight probably no more than 2500-3000 lbs.
Aside from it sagging in the rear, swaying a bit on the highway, dragging chains, sucking fuel like crazy, and not climbing a hill worth a dam....it did OK....barely.
I know this as I was watching out my rearview mirror of my F350 pulling my 30' trailer full of junk.....:D given the choice, my FIL (professional truck driver) chose the 4runner.
With the short wheelbase and light duty rear end, I would speculate a jetski, boat, or very light trailer would be the best match....but not a fair sized trailer and tractor!
Good call!

Check your owners manual and look at what the 4 runner is rated for with a weight distributing hitch. My Tundra is only rated for 5000lbs without one so when I bought one to pull the 26' enclosed trailer (10k axles) with my 3000 lb race car in it and all the spare parts and equipment. Pulled it for years without a single problem. With 130k miles on it and the drivetrain is as strong as the day it came out of the factory. Like you I would love to replace it with a diesel Tundra (someday).

I bought a trailer for much the same reasons you want one. I have it a couple of years, and used it maybe 6 times. Mine is a car hauler style, 7k trailer, and I paid a little over $2000 for it. I have a 1/2 ton pick up to tow it so thats not an issue. I guess my point is, only using my trailer a few times, its probably not ever going to pay for itself. It is nice to have when I need it.

I'm the opposite side of the spectrum.

I hauled my old Kubota, my old Farmall-A, three friends cars. Firewood, lumber, pipe, hay, concrete retaining wall block, sod. Cub Scout parade floats. Wood splitter. Motorcycles. Our latest tractor. Fence material. Four different Bobcats. Concrete tools after buddy's flatbed truck broke down on way to a job. A friends little Kubota.

I have definitely got my moneys worth out of this 16' flatbed 7000lb trailer.

I am with you. I have hauled 3 different tractors numerous times other than mine, boats, docks, lumber, mulch, over 20 cars, boat supplies and stands, ect. I use my trailer about once a week from March to October and maybe once a month the other months. I am in the NEED category. The winch on the front of the trailer is also a NEED for all the stuff I have hauled.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat. I keep trying to justify getting a trailer (I have a full-size half-ton with tow package) by thinking of other uses I might put it to (besides very infrequent trips to the dealer). The local towing company is typically $75 per trip ($150 RT) for the distances I go, but I hate paying for just hauling...but the economics favours hiring the hauling rather than owning the trailer. Darn!

Well, now I guess I'll just have to go buy some other attachment to make myself feel better.

Here's what I have: a 2007 Toyota forerunner with a 5K# towing capacity on the factory installed 2" receiver hitch with 7 pin socket connector. The trailer dealer I spoke to today sells Bri-Mar trailers and has an 18' dual axle equipment trailer with a Hopkins towing engager factory installed. he says that with figuring 4K#'s for the tractor and 2k#'s for the trailer I would be 1K#'s over my max towing capacity- but he is not telling me to walk away from the idea.

I have two concerns, being over rated towing capacity, and cost of unit.

He would sell it to me for $3,300 plus 150 for the elect brake control installed in the vehicle.

He says its left over last year's model and prices have gone up 8% ?, (I believe he said 8) since last order.

Thoughts, comments all are appreciated.
BTW, he also said a landscape trailer of the same weight at $3100 would have smaller axles/wheels/tires/bearings so it would be no better value, and would likely have more problems due to bearings wearing out quicker, etc.
He also says better to be over capacity than under capacity.

All replies appreciated.

Forgive me i have not read any posts yet just going to jump in this then go back later and read. I have a 01 Toy Highlander. Yes i know it is smaller in tow cap. as well as physical size. Its limit is 3500 lb. I put an aftermarket 2" hitch on it, anyway i towed our 17ft CC boat that loaded wet i think weighs under 2K lbs. Its got a 60hp 2stroke that i guess weighs 200lbs the boat dry weighs 600lbs 350lbs for trailer 100lbs batteries 60lbs gas, and on and on. Anyway my point is the car pulled it fine as its well under the weight, did not push the car that i could tell and the trailer is not braked. But the vehicle did buck similar to the truck in my avatar loaded just like it is. Which is with my yanmar tractor and bushhog loaded on a 16ft tandem trailer. Which i would guess to be in the just under 4K range. I personally at least on my highlander (i know its FWD) would not want to be 1K# over my limit even with brakes. I could not even imagine towing that tractor setup i have with it, it may do it but not sure how long the transmission will hold the brakes and everything else!
