Help please - tow mirror, upper, popped out, need hints to replace

I've an '02 with tow mirrors.
Limb fell on truck. First pic.


Top part of driver side rearview mirror POPPED OUT.

In the second pic


I circled in red the pieces I know I got to slide back in, and it held for a while, but then the mirror fell out again.

I suspect I didn't get the "socket", circled in orange, to pop on.

I'm apprehensive to put to much pressure on it, I tend to break things.

Any hints on how to get it back together?

I've done this a few times on my Superduties. It is actually pretty easy to replace these mirrors.

First, squeeze the split jackscrews (Ford's term) and just push them into the corresponding socket. Then push the solid pins into the correct holes. Then firmly push on the center of the mirror until you hear the socket on the mirror pop onto the ball. You can then "center" the mirror manually and then use the electric control to fine tune the alignment.

The mirror is pretty strong and can take a firm push to seat it onto the ball.

It's the lower convex mirros that break easily when trying to replace them. And they ain't cheap to replace!

Thanks, I was REALLY afraid of breaking the mirror. Often when I go to do a "simple" repair I end up doing more damage.

Another member PM'd me and it seems the "official" repair involves heating the socket to soften it.

Place the new exterior mirror glass assembly, with the glass side down, on a
smooth firm surface.


CAUTION: Do not
overheat the exterior mirror glass backing plate. Heat only until the backing
plate is warm to the touch (approximately 10 seconds).
Using the special
tool, warm the main pivot and jack pin sockets in the exterior mirror glass
backing plate.

I soaped the male portion and pressed with gloved hand firmly and it popped in.
