Help Rebuilding a Hiller/Bedder

A REAL time saver! Took me thirty seconds to hill a row which would take an Hour manually and I would have blisters and a sore back when I was through before. This thing is AWESOME! I'll plant more potatoes now!!!

Found out that the bearings are made of ...... wait for it .... wood! One of them is split, so I will probably be making a new one. I was wondering however, what species of wood should I use? Hickory? Oak? Something else? Anyone have any ideas?

Even with today's technology for metal, "Old Iron" is hard to beat. Glad to see you put the part back to work. Great job!

I don't have a use for a hiller but if I did I'll think about the design of yours.

Our circular sawmill has a piece of wood for the blade guide. Not sure how many years it had been on there before we had to replace it. Just used what we had, " Oak " and it works fine for now. The handle for the operator is made of hickory simular to pick handle. If you had to replace the wood bearing what type of wood did you use?

I used some black walnut. I didn't want to wait or pay for that stuff posted earlier. My brother has a wood working thing that you can "turn" wood on. not really a lathe but you put a router on a base and then it will round the stock as you slide the router up and down a track. You can turn the stock as you move the router. A lathe would have been quicker. But we got er done with what we had. Didn't have my camera that day or I would have posted pic's of that too. Thanks for looking.
