Hey Guys,
I have a generous neighbor who let me borrow his 2008 m7040 and wood chipper (he gets the logs). As I was starting her up this morning, the key snapped off. I can get it running, and turn it off and on etc... But that's not how I'd like to return it. Was it was my fault or just a matter of time? Doesn't really matter, return it how you found it or better and all that.

He is on vacation for about 10 days, so I have some breathing room.

How hard is it to get a replacement key, and anyone got a tip for getting a key out of the starter? It is in deep and I cannot get it with pliers or anything like that.

Thanks in advance!

Any Dealer can get you a key for a few bucks they are NOT individually keyed. If you know the key type you get them for a couple of buck on line even Amazon carries then
Here a set of most Kubota key types all 12 for less than 10

Thank you for this information. Now I just need to get the key out.

Strong magnet? I'll do some google as well.

Thanks again.

Edit: looks like their are kits for getting keys out, I'll order one with the extra keys and give it a go. Thanks folks.

If a key breaks off deep in your ignition, try lubricating the lock, and then using a thin, stiff wire or a key extractor tool to gently wiggle and pull the broken key out. If that doesn't work, consider calling a locksmith or mechanic.

I was thinking a little super glue on the part in hand it should just
take avery small dab you don't want it to spread out or off the key

Dealer should have keys. If it's an open station the key is located in just the right place to get accidentally hit with your leg when turning backwards. I almost broke a key off, it cracked halfway through. Took it to dealer and they got me replacements. Think it was around 17 CDN for pair of keys.

Stiff wire and squirting some penetrating oil in the lock cylinder might force the stub out.

I think I am going to call a locksmith, with my luck I'll glue the key in there as well. Good idea.

It is an open station, I found some keys online and I've got them on order, I might see if the locksmith can make one too, or if its too far gone.

Thanks!

Well, locksmith failed, he got around the key but it wouldn't come all the way out. I have another key at a localish dealer I am going to pick up, the amazon ones had mixed reviews for my machine here.

Right now I think I will try to unscrew the cylinder from the thing and get it out from the back, but we will see how that goes. Still starts just fine with the screwdriver.

So I am just going to wrap this up, I know you folks who helped don't need this information, but maybe someone in the future.

I ended up taking the cylinder off the tractor, and a buddy says he can get the key out no problem from there. The locksmiths I spoke to, also wanted it off to take it out, so this can help someone in the future. It is pretty easy to do.

1) The silver area around the key is notched, this can turn and come off. I used a LIGHT tap with a hammer and a flat head to get it to spin just a bit, then did the rest by hand. The cylinder will go right out the back, into the engine bay.

2) There is a black screw surrounded by a washer down by the pedals. (2) Total, one on each side of the tractor. If you take these out (they are short, be ready to grab it) you can pull up the orange metal and get at the cylinder.

3)Follow the pigtail back maybe 8-10 inches, and you will find it clipped into the main wiring. Discconect the clip and you are home free.

I am guessing you go in reverse to put it all back together again.

Something to note!!!
I ended up getting keys from the Kubota dealer (2 for $20) after not being confident in the Amazon keys. They are still coming in the mail but I didn't want to rely on them (2 for $6). The dealer told me that there are different keys for the Cabbed model of this and the ROPS model. There is even a different key for the 2wd and 4wd model. The two will not work on each other apparently. I think this is what people were running into on Amazon saying the key didn't work like it advertised. So when you are re-ordering your keys, make sure it is for the correct version of your tractor, despite what some think, they are not all the same.

Thank you everyone for your help with this! Went from worried about breaking a borrowed tractor, to "we'll get this fixed" in about 2 replies!
