Here in Michigan we have an abundance of cherry pits. If I told you the process of making marischino (sic) cherries, you'd never even think about eating one again...it's disgusting to say the least. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Around here cherry pits are sold just like pellets, in 40 pound bags. They burn way too fast for my liking.

Now I must know... time for some googling. My wife has always loved the M-cherries, the red ones.

Just bought an Englander pellet stove, glad to see your positive opinion when I did a quick search. I found some pellets locally from American pellet in Montreal, Quebec. They claim close to 9,000 btu's per lb. the real issue is the price, $274.00/ton. Right now it seems I bought just in time for the shortage. It's more a situation of who has them, rather than how much. Now I just have to get it hooked up.

Torin:

You don't happen to have a '73 Shovelhead by chance?

On thread:
Order your anticipated pellets by the ton next fall from TSC or a big chain. I always order 4 tons but never use that many. I just take the unused ones and leave them on a skid, wrapped up in the barn all summer. They don't spoil as long as the don't get wet.

It's not that there is a shortage so to speak, the pellet manufacturers like Lignetics make them all year around but their stockpile runs low in the winter.

You will like the Englander, I am sitting typing on my laptop in my Lazyperson in front of ours right now.....very warm.

Daryl,
My '73 FLH is my favorite toy and the biggest money pit I have. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Some day I'll take some pics with the digital camera and post them.
Thanks for the info, I guess like a lot of people, I'm getting tired of relying completely on oil. Unfortunately I waited until winter. I'm thinking I'll enjoy the convenience of the pellets rather than the split wood. I'm hoping to get the time to hook it up this weekend. We've got a local manufacturer of pellets right in Jaffery, NH. I'm hoping that will help to keep pricing a little more even in the long run.
Thanks again,
Torin

I run a Avalon newport, takes the place of the gas furnance.Heat the mansion(1000 sq.)with this stove. I like it.
I value time, and I spend about 20 minutes a week to maintain the stove(easy cleaning is most important feature in a st ove ).Dont buy a stove thats a slave for cleaning.Gas company sends me letters accusing me of cheating..I love it ...furnance has been off for 5 yrs.Dry creek or Alleghenes pellets work great .

This is our first winter with the house re-done and that includes all new plumbing, electrical and a new foundation, siding, wet cellulose blown in insulation and a completely sealed up and draft free basement and crawl space. My wife paid for all that, she makes way more money than I do. Anyway, I haven't had the furnace on at all this year except when I shut down the Englander every 2 weeks to clean out the ash. We are keeping the house at 70 or a little better and averaging about 1.5 bags of Lignetics every 24 hours.

Last winter I had to keep the furnace at 50 (basement t'stat) all the time or the pipes in the crawl would freeze. Not cool.
