How did it come off?

The two nuts are holding it on the end. The metal lever looks like it stops short of those nuts only due to the dirt, but it does indeed extend underneath them. There were two of those metal lever/plates on top of each other, which made it really stiff. My light weight just wouldn't keep the switch engaged.

Also, how did you add arrows and writing in the picture?

I used Paint Shop Pro to add the text prior to attaching them to the post.
