Help w/clutch use on Hydro TC33DA

I don't pretent to know why the manual is written that way. I do know the ONLY way to get two straight cut gears to mesh is to turn one or the other. That means either the tractor has to roll a little, or the hydrostatic unit's output shaft has to turn a little. THAT requires a running tractor, an engaged clutch when the tractor has one, a turning hydro input shaft, and a tap of the hydro pedal. Please understand to DISENGAGE the clutch one pushes the pedal. ENGAGING the clutch involves RELEASING it, or letting your foot off the pedal. I know this is nitpicking, but it is an annoying (to me)error many folks make.

Jinman,

I can believe your scenario. I have had the press report on construction projects and failures that I have been involved in and they almost never get the facts right. They have even been known to change the story several times to make it worse than it was. When I go to look at a construction problem or failure I listen to what is told to me but rely on the actual situation & available data to sort it out myself.

I would expect a equipment manufacture would work to a higher level but asking perfection in literature is probably asking too much. That is sad since some of us expect that and due to ignorance follow what is written. Another excellent justification for the collective wisdom of the members of this site and their experience.

RickB,

I do understand the basics of the mechanics of a transmission & clutch. My use of the words engage and disengage were directed towards the "meshing" of the transmission gears in the wanted range (i.e. gears engaging each other) vs. the transmission in neutral (the gears disengaged relative to each other) and not towards the use of the clutch. After I wrote the post I realized the possible confusion but was too lazy/tired to modify it. Sorry for the confusion.

As far as aligning gears, I will no longer waste the effort to disengage the clutch. I had thought that the manual did not make much sense but being new to tractors I listened to the manual. I have vehicles (other than tractors) with manual transmissions & disengaging the clutch, if shifted at the correct RPM’s, could be optional, especially on a bike, but not a good habit. Guess I carried this logic to tractors. Now I know a little more.

As far as the manual I wish we could rely on what is written in a manual being absolutely accurate but as Jinman stated that is most likely a pipe dream. Due to my job I have been conditioned to think that everything written (in my case in reports) is accurate & factual. I needed to hear the scenario from Jinman to bring me back to reality.
