Doesn't sound stupid to me. Makes a lot of sense.

It isn't stupid at all. This is a old trick of excavator/backhoe operators. The size of the rock can at times be too large for the largest of machines. A smart operator would not try and lift something too large and potentially break a component when it could be buried without having to lift it. Sometimes this is not possible due to circumstances but if it can be done it saves a lot of time and possible damage to the machine.

That's what I do all the time with both rocks much larger and a large excavator. Just make sure before you roll the darn thing that the hole is way oversize. It's a real pain if it gets stuck still sticking out but further down.

I have never heard of DEXPAN so I looked it up here.

This site has amazing photos of how rocks just like the one you show get busted up quickly.. I have not yet determined the cost of the material.

'Kay - it's out! Thanks for the responses, but the hammer drill has it. Demolition hammer, actually. I got lucky with my first choice of fracture and split the rock in half. I was able to push the halves apart with my 'hoe, which gave me something to work with.

I pulverized better than half of one piece with the demo hammer, and pulled out the remainder. I did the same with the other piece, but dragged out about 2/3 of that one. I don't know what it weighs, but I tried to tip the bigger piece on end with my LA680 loader, and the loader couldn't lift it at all. At any rate, the smashed up pieces are back in the hole, the biggest chunks are out, all of the dirt is back in the hole, and it pretty much took all day.

As for the hole n' roll suggestions, that was my first choice, but the rock was way too big to roll. I couldn't budge it, other than making it jiggle - the backhoe would just throw the tractor all over the place. Same for the drag method - no way would the tractor be able to move it - I was spinning my tires pushing the larger of the two pieces that I pulled out.

Incidently, this weekend definately pushed my backhoe to the limits of the machine - I won't even get into the stump-pulling adventure I went thorough yesterday, other than it was brutal. Thank gawd I went for the big one instead of a 6' or 7.5'. As it is, I want a bigger one.

Thanks again for the replys - Jay
