Lots of opinions and methods on how to "clean" cast iron from the start. I've been using the oven cleaner, black trash bag and direct sunlight on the last few pieces I've prepped. I've been happy with the results. Depending on the age of the C.I., determines the amount of finish work it received before it left the factory. The older stuff had more machine work, the newer not so much. On the later model stuff I take an angle grinder and a tiger paw/sanding disc and slick up the cooking surface. I start with the lower grits and work my way up to the finer ones.
