sometimes on my 1802d the gears are hard to change....i can push the clutch in and out a few times and it will work good for awhile and then hang up again when i try to change from forward to reverse or reverse to forward....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "sticking" or "hanging up", but if it is grinding you may have a bad clutch or need adjustment to 1/2"-3/4" free play. Otherwise that's just the nature of gear drive unsyncronized Yanmar trannys. If you are a new owner you just have to get accustomed to the feel, and it's amazing how it improves over time.

sorry...i guess i didn't do a good job of explaining my problem...when i try to shift from reverse to another gear..i can get out of reverse ok but have to pump the clutch a couple of times and scrape the gears before i can get into anyother gear.

Mike,
That's typical for a tractor transmission. The problem is that when you take it out of reverse, none of the other gears are aligned properly to get it into gear. You are doing the right thing in letting the clutch out and then depressing again. Soon you will get better at it and not grind the gears so much when you shift. Sometimes you can push the shifter toward the desired gear gently and feel the gears sort of bumping, or just starting to grind. Wait as the frequency of the bumping decreases, and just before it stops, push the shifter into the desired gear.

One other thing, it seems to help if you drop the rpm's as low as possible before shifting.

Mike,
"Pumping" the clutch is usually not required on that tractor. Sometimes you may not be able to get it into a gear because they are not lined up right but 90% of the time it should go right in. If it continues to grind no matter how long the pedal is down, you probably need to adjust your clutch pedal or replace the pressure plate.
