Billc,

Does the tooth bar get in the way when you are trying to backdrag and smooth with the FEL? Do you find yourself having to remove it for certain jobs?

No regrets about front blower.Don't get enough snow to spend that much $$$ for something I have to store and rarely use. Between that big reversable Bush Hog blade on the rear and the FEL I have the snow base covered/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

p.s. you use the FEL and rear blade for misc. projects all year long. And...the big one...those larger attachments for the bigger tractors are verrry expensive.Good Luck.

Driver,

You sure are looking at some nice tractors. I have a much smaller B21, but can talk about the tooth bar on a FEL. Yes, I think the loader did better "back drag" work without the tooth bar. What I do now is use the back edge of the bucket rather than the front edge. Because I leave the box blade on for ballast, most of the time, it has not been an issue. The tooth bar attaches with just two bolts so it is not the big of job to remove.

Driver, I was not aware of that. I have an 80" Woods mower. Its big and heavy ( about 1400lbs). I use it on my International with about 40 hp don't know what the PTO ouput is. On very, very rare instances do I bog down. Very tall and dense grass will do it so I must slow down my speed. It is so rarely a problem that its not a consideration. I will have to say that the companies specs will probably be your best bet for HP requirements. Check out other makes of cutters on the web besides just Brush Hog. Woodsonline.com. Landpride, etc. There are many great mowers out there, Rat...

What price did you get on the Woods bushhog? When you get your new rig and you are not delighted(doubtful/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif), I might have to take a long overdue vacation and buy a used mower from you. I won't hesitate to pull that mower on a L4610.

Driver,

My tooth bar is almost always on. I'm forever digging up a bolder here, up rooting a tree there, etc. When I get a load of crush and run deliver, or I'm doing some grading work, I take the tooth bar off. It attaches with two large bolts through the side of the bucket. To get it on or off takes maybe 4 minutes. The sucker is heavy though. Be careful not to loose your grip.

The tooth bar is kind of like the canopy. I had neither on my last tractor. Didn't ever miss it. Now that I have both, I'll never have another tractor without either.

Hope this answers your question.

Mutt,

The brush cutter I was looking at is a Landpride. I don't have a firm price on that individual compenent yet.

Anyone have opinions comparing Landpride and Bush Hog for brush cutters?

Thanks,

Driver,

I just got done comparing the Bush Hog, Landpride, Woods BrushBull (new series ) and the JD HX series. I ordered the Woods Brushbull 600. It's the heaviest of the 4 with the highest HP gearbox and just seemed to be the overall best in quality and value. It also /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif was the lowest in price! BUT, I only looked at 60" units. The larger ones might swing to a different brand. Who knows?

Things I looked for;
Blade tip speed
Does the unit "trap trash and water on top"
Weight (indication of durability)
Gearbox HP rating
Blade change ergonomics
full length welds or "stitch" welds
Dealer quality, support and service

There are probably some I'm forgetting, but that's what I remember. On the bright side, the BIG4 all were very close in most regards, so it's tough to really make a bad decision.

Great List/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Blade tip speed for some reason I had never thought to watch for differences/w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif.Have you found large differences? Thanks for sending me "back to school".

Mutt,
Thanks for the compliment. I get paid to think for a living so I try to not do it much in the off hours, but once in a while I slip up and think at home. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

To paraphrase a recent president, "that depends on how you define large". There is a range of 12,000 to 17,000 fpm from what the mfg literature states. The older designs tended to list lower speeds, so they may be finding that you get a better cut with a higher tip speed. Also, the gear boxes are getting stronger and they can probably withstand the stress of going from 17,000 to 0 fpm in the blink of an eye. Or it could all be marketing hype! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I got to know, how did you get the nickname of "Mutt"?
