Hello I am trying to get my overrunning clutch for my Discbine put back together after replacing a lot of broken parts and I can't figure out how the pawl's and springs are inserted into the driver, I have tried according to the parts and repair manual but the images are scetchy at best.

Yes, you have pics showing them installed in both directions. I'm only guessing, but I would go with the third pic, and installi them that way if you can't remember how it came apart.

The manual, pic no. 3.........appears to show the pawl, with the flat part towards the top, the 'loop' at the bottom.

What about the springs? I figured they go over the pawl's (cause the shapes look simular) but when I did that and turned it the springs popped out.

If you look at the design of the inside of that hub, you'll find the the pawls only move 1/4 inch or so by the looks of it. You can see where the ends of the pawls will catch on the hub.

I really don't know how it operates, or the assembly procedure..........I was kinda hoping to jog your memory as to how you took it apart.

But on pic 3, that appears to be the position the pawl should be in, with the spring installed.

When I took it apart there was no springs and the pawl's were broken, that's why I'm having so much problems getting it back together. I do see where they catch though and logically I can see which way the pawl's should be facing when going in. This pic is according to the book on how the spring should go but when I do that the spring catches on the lip that the pawl's are supposed to catch

Looks to me like if you flip the spring over on the pawl, the short side will clear when it engages, and the long side will simply jump past the notch the pawl catces in, when it over runs.

I'm at a loss. your spring looks different than the drawing in pic 5(although that isn't uncommon), but in pic 5(the manual), you can't even see the spring on the pawl. And that appears to be an actual photo of the assembly.

Maybe TBN member RickB could help you with this. It might be worth a try to PM him.

I can't remember working on a over-running clutch on a disc mower as they're were just beginning to be sold when I left a JD dealer BUT I've worked on many JD sq balers with the similar clutch. Balers didn't utilize the springs and I think the parts photo showing the dogs is incorrect. Put the dogs facing the way the baler parts schematic shows them and it will work. Baler over-running clutches operated fine without the springs and I'm trying to determine the usefulness of the springs.

After viewing you photo of the hub(parts key #9 baler parts schematic) or (parts key #10 disc mow parts schematic) I think the areas that the pawls are intended to engage are excessively worn. For further assessment close-up photos would be required.

I tried that and although it would work better you still have to bend the spring excessively to get it put into the slip clutch.

It does look a lot different, that picture has gotten me stumped as to where the spring goes too but I determined that the pawl's go with the long side facing the ledges on the slip clutch (it's the only way for them to really engage.) still got to figure out the mystery of the spring now.

That's the way I put them (the way you described to put them), it was the only way that made sense for them to catch the edges I think the springs are to keep the pawl's close to the edge so they grab quicker and easier, just my opinion, I got my dealer stumped on it as well.

They are worn quite a bit and are due for replacement but spending $4500 for the Discbine and so far another $1000 on parts just on that middle shaft and for fluid changes money is tight and I figure if I can get at least this season out of it I can replace it next season.
