GFCIs fail. Pond pumps are certified to a much higher standard than the "lake pumps" I see around here, which are almost always shallow well pumps with DIY electrical service.


OP said he was going to put the pump on the dock. A few feet from the water's edge may be an OK safety margin. Personally I wouldn't want anyone to be able to reach it while touching the water in any way.
When I put my pump in next year the most convenient place is for it to be housed and sheltered in a wood shed 10' from the shore so that's where it will be. I'll put it on a GFCI and if it fails someday the hazard will still be 10' from the water and in a dry area.

Ahh yes, but what happens when the gfci shorts in your shed and the the motor burns up and the shed catches fire and then a burning ember floats to your roof catching your house on fire and the fire breaks a pipe which sprays water onto your electric meter flooding the driveway creating a pool of electric death! Oh the humanity!! :confused2:
Just have a pool truck deliver the water then youll have no worries at all... Wait what if you dont use DOT approved wheel chocks and it breaks free and crushes.... Well... :laughing:

As JJ pointed out you are probably needing to think gas driven pumps. It really depends on height from pond to tank, resistance pressure from length of pipe from pump to tank. Depending on those factors will determine what size pump to buy. If you have a way to transport the tank to and from the pond that will make the choice simpler and lower in price.
