Thanks for the help, I can get a starter for a 1980 Dodge Colt, 2.6L auto transmission from my local Autozone for 53.99. Once again thanks for the help.

So you can confirm that this worked? Just want to be as certain as possible before I attempt it.

Using the 1980 Dodge Colt starter did not work for me. The bell housing (side with the gear) did not fit. I took the bell housing off the old starter and put on the new starter but the new starter body didn't have the cut out needed to get the nuts back on the studs to fasten the starter to the motor, I hope that makes sense. Bottom line it didn't work for my and I paid the $150 to just have the old starter rebuilt.

I'm not sure if I could have completely gutted the new starter and took the parts and installed them in to the old starter body. I wanted some I could depend on and the local automotive electrical shop is well known for quality so I just went that route. Once I got it back from being rebuilt, it worked great.

Let me know if you have any questions.

NEW TO THE FORUM and new to owning an MT372D. As with MANY other folks...I too am having trouble with my starter on MT372D Diesel. It would not spin the motor fast enough to start. I took the starter off and took to local alternator shop. They said the brushes and all were good. The problem is with the clutch on the gear allowing it to spin. Does anyone know of a substitute for this part that will work? I am leery of the 8tooth Dodge colt starter for fear of damaging flywheel.

I think that starter is meant to work on the 370, maybe there was a change in bell housing? I know there have been 3 versions of the pistons for the KE70.

UPDATE: was able to get my starter "rebuilt" by local electrical shop. Wasn't crazy about what they did but it certainly helped my situation. They put a new solenoid which helped with a very intermittent issue with the starter not engaging. Then they disassembled and lubed all bushings and the "clutch" and it definitely spins faster now which help with starting. Also, just a note to fellow newbies, make sure the hydro level is not stuck int he UP position or it wont' stat at all as the hydro pump is still engaged. There is an adjustment for the lever that is supposed to tip it to the center position once the 3 point arm gets to the top of it's travel and mine is currently misadusted...on the list for fixes this weekend. Figure this might help someone else out along the way.
