Helping a Leaking PTO Seal (Leak Less)

On my first disassembly of a tractor wheel I mentioned to my uncle that I didn't know what to use to replace the leather looking device that I'd found between the two bearings. He explained that it was hardened grease.

Of all the seals I've received over the years... this was the first with an insert in the center (that I remember . The insert looked so nice (stainless machined with rubber center) that I immediately assumed this was just a new seal design! They had the seal voids packed with grease and the insert wasn't going to fall out on it's own. Learn something new every day!

I guess they just cut a 3/4" long piece of 1 1/4" stainless pipe. But the edges of that cut piece are beveled and the interior is rubber with grooves. Looks like they spent as much time making the insert as they did the seal!

In 1995 after my dad died, I installed a PTO unit on the old Farmall C. Before installing it, I went through and replaced all the bearings, seals, etc..

The PTO shaft seal was made out of leather. Where do you think CR Seals got their name? Chicago Rawhide. Chicago was a huge railroad hub back in the day with many, many feedlots and slaughterhouses in town. Plenty of materials available to make seals out of....Chicago Rawhide.
