Helping out former workplace buddy, old neighbor, relative, etc......

If this was in reply to me, then time does not always equal money. I have helped several neighbors build and repair things many times. To me, a night in the garage being productive is much better than a night doing nothing. It's not like they are taking away from my daytime working hours.

The bonus is that every time you work on something you learn something from it. This has helped me many times on my own projects.

I agree. Find myself in this position regularly. Actually one evening this week a friend is going to bring his Grand Cherokee to my warm shop so another friend of mine can install a remote start system on it. I look forward to it. Even though I have no skin in this game. I'll know a lot more about the install when it's done. :)

. . . I'm the same way as someone else posted, I will call someone up and ask them what there doing, . . ..

I hate this question when asked.

If you ask me what I'm doing I'll take it that you will determine if what I am doing is less important than what you want done.
Just tell me what you need and I'll decide if I can break away from what I'm doing.

My comeback all the time to this question is "What do you have going on?" They don't really want to know what I'm doing anyway.

"What are you doing?"

"Why do you ask?"

Hmm, what to make of this:

I called a neighbor once, left a detailed message about what is going on, "need a look and idea on moving something", "maybe help move it", "but need more eyes on, first".

Wife calls back, says call direct.

Call direct, no call back.

No problem for me, took it as clear indication that I was on my own.

I have a neighbor who we trade favors back and forth with. Usually the call will start with "do you have a few minutes to help with x" and in his case, my answer is yes 99% of the time.
He always has interesting projects going on :D

That's how I am as well. Get to the point of the contact first. Have idol chit-chat later in the conversation. I hate it when it goes the other way. I just want to say "what do you want"? :)

If I had :2cents: for every dollar of my time I've helped people I'd be a rich man!!!
It never bothers me to help someone who appreciates it. And for the ones that don't...it's usually once and done!

:santahat: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL!!!
