Richard,
That's encouraging news....... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I haven't been around for a couple days so I didn't see this post.

Our dog Belle who we lost to cancer a couple of months ago had parvo when she was a puppy. Their immunity is not very good, even with the vaccine until around 15 weeks I think.

There is a Parvo Serum that is available.....our vet gave it to Belle....I'm not sure if it made the difference or not but Belle pulled through in 3-4 days. Ask your vet if Otis has had the serum and if it is recommended.

The big thing is to keep the fluids in the dog and control any secondary infections with antibiotics.

With agressive treatment Otis has a very good chance or recovery. The serum was new 5 years ago so the vet didn't have much data on its effectiveness....there is probably more data now. I would ask the question first thing in the morning.

I know how you feel, we had Belle for two days before we were at the vet and I would have done ANYTHING to save her.

Good Luck, our prayers are with you.

Kevin

( it seems to be "accepted" that the shelter has the virus permanantly established there.)

Shelters have big problems, as they get dogs in all the time, and some of them are going to be sick. Most of them don't have the resourrces to properly quarantine new animals, or do the sort of thorough biological decontamination that is necessary. It would drive many of them under.

( It seems to me I smelled bleach while at the shelter.)

That's a good thing. Whether they have Parvo or not, they should be disinfecting. Bleach and Pine Sol are probably the two most common smells around any kennel.

Not sure if that's really true and it doesn't make me feel good hearing/knowing that but that's what the Doc said/implied. I fear most of those pups I saw the other day are in for a bad week soon.

What kind of DOUBLE bites me is when the Wifey paid the shelter for the dog, she wrote a SECOND check and gave them a donation for $50.00 to put to their new place they are trying to get funds for. We laughed today on phone wondering if we ought to go back to them and ask for the $50 back so we can apply it to the $200/night fee.

Richard

Hmmm.... I was re-reading this before hitting 'post' and had a recollection. It seems to me I smelled bleach while at the shelter. I didn't pay MUCH attention to it as I (erroneously) presumed they did the spaying/neutering there and might use bleach for ???

In view of todays facts, I wonder if they use that as some ongoing program of trying to fight this virus. )

I had the Vet call me twice on Sunday...

first, let me point out that on Saturday, Otis was acting like if in a near coma... just laying there limp, not wagging tail, nothing.. just eyes a-gaze...

Sunday, Vet called to say Otis had some more life in his eyes, had stood up and was walking a bit... BUT had also started to show signs of blood out his back side. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sunday evening, vet called back again, said status quo.

Monday morning, I was there at 7:30, seems Otis was up, about, and LOOKING (relatively) fantastic. Even to the point I wondered if we could bring him home today.

Vet said nope. Still showing blood out the back door and was still unable to hold any food down without vomiting. Evidently, Otis had tugged, or rolled over onto his IV setup (some kind of brace around his leg to keep hose from pinching??)

None the less, ALL of that was taken off also. Seems BOTH front legs are shaved in the middle of them, he had a vein collapse, so they had to use other leg. With BOTH legs shaved in middle, his fur is puffy on top (shoulder) and at his paw... he's starting to look like a poodle... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just called the Vet at about 2:00 today to inquire about him coming home and got vetoed again. I told the vet that was fine by me, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Besides, Otis was still unable to keep food down. they were going to feed him "later on", I surmised 4:00 or so.

Seems he's staying put for tonight. I must admit though, after seeing his lethargy on Saturday and seeing him today...he seems significantly more alert and energetic. Frankly, I think it's all over now, save for plugging his two leaking ends /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'll post another update tomorrow as I'll be stopping by again tonight, and in morning on way to work.

We (and Otis) sure do appreciate all the positive thoughts and concern from all.

Great news Richard! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We'll keep the good thoughts heading Otis's way just to play it safe until you have him home safe and sound! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sounds Great Richard!!!!!!

Otis will be home before ya know it

Thanks for the update Richard.

I hope the healing continues and he's home safe and sound real soon.

Not knowing much about the disease--I have a question. It sounds like he's made it through the "tough" spot. Does that mean the residual effects (vomiting, etc.) will subside with time?

Not having seen the dog, I can't say for certain, but it does sound like Otis has turned the corner and is on the way to recovery. It is a guarded recovery because of the amount of trauma that has taken its toll on the bowel of the animal. Given time, he will make a complete recovery and there will usually be no residual problems. It will take about 45 - 60 days to effect a complete recovery from what I remember. One of the residual problems that I do see is that as a result of the parvo, the dog might not grow as fast or as large as he might have had this event not happened. I am glad to hear that he is doing well. Once you get him home, be prepared to have some diarrhea occasionally. I would confine him to an area that can be easily cleaned initially and after he is totally housebroken, then you can give him a greater range of the home.

The advice you have gotten is right on. My wife is a vet- see's a TON of these cases. If caught early, there's a 60/40 chance for them. Some times, they just don't make it, no matter what, but it sounds as though Otis will recover from this...

I've never heard of a buried dog reinfesting a new dog from underground... what will happen is this virus lives in the feces of it's carrier. If you had other dogs, It'd be VERY beneficial to make sure their shots are up to date. Clean up all the feces you can, use bleach as much as you can on his living area.
At her clinic, all parvo dogs are quarantined, and everyone who walks in his quaranitine area sprays bleach on their shoe soles. They also use bleach and a green colored spray (the name escapes me, and she's in bed already) that's available to vets.
She gives a whole load of drugs, along with lots of IV fluids, vitamins, ect. Knoxville has some GREAT vets- I think you did good by getting him there quickly.
Praying for his rapid recovery, and best of luck to all three of you.
