Helpppppppppp, dog with parvo question

It is an involved story about the dog, so I won't get into it. I had a television in the room and it never went off... did a lot of reading also. Friends were allowed to visit 24 hours a day and even though I was in "solitary", that was to protect other patients. The whole wing was private rooms and we would all congregate in our door ways and hold long distance conversations until we were there for 8 weeks... after that, we were considered sufficiently healed to be allowed the company of other patients. Interestingly, there was a male ward and a female ward, but not for the private rooms on the wing. There were some female patients on the wing with the same infection as a result of motorcycle accidents. Apparently this is a common complication of motor cycle accidents. Even though it was considered a "infectious disease", we were all housed on the orthopedic floor. Guess it is because it is a bone infection.....

Been busy past couple days with company. I see some mild interaction here, so thought I'd post a followup on Otis.

Brought him home last week. He slept a lot, was very sweet and in general, was like that dog that just calmly lays at the foot of your bed while you get ready for whatever.

Then the next day, the little hellion (sp?) emerged /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Long story short, prior to his bout with parvo, the wife had wondered why he seemed so calm, so restful and liked to sleep a lot (becoming ill). She mentioned to me, "he doesn't seem to have that uncontrollable energy like our other dogs had as pups"

Fast forward to last week, indeed, even to as recent as Yesteday (Sunday)

Seems the parvo was why. He's a rambunctious little rascal. Follows us everywhere, typically running after us, slip/sliding on the wood floor on his way to a wipeout as his feet slide out from under him.

He's a morning dog. He get's taken out to go to the bathroom anywhere between 4 and 5. The wife (who likes to sleep in) doest'n much care for that aspect /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Last night, we had a dinner party with some family over, and during the entire making of dinner, he just layed on the floor watching me. Then as we were at dinner table eating, he came around once/twice, then went to living room, near fire, put his head down and took a nap on the blanket we have down for him.

Friday, my Mom came into town. She told me Saturday that from the time she arrived on Friday morning, to Friday EVENING, she herself, saw a noticable increase in his energy and general playfulness. (Mom's a retired nurse, so she's accustomed to some of the stages of the healing process)

All in all, his dirreah has subsided, his energy has increased, he's simply becoming a cute puppy again. Sunday, I heard him bark several times (for the first time).

This next week when the Monday holiday is over and we both head back to work is going to be interesting. I have one of those training cages we'll use during the time we're gone.

I/we are touched by all the warmth and support we received here.

Thanks again
Richard

Congratulations Richard on weathering the storm! I don't know if I would've had your patience through out the ordeal. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I do know that because of your problems, the wife and I have paid a lot more attention to our dog. Not because we think she might be ill. Just because it made us realize how quickly something could happen to her and we wouldn't have her anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Make sure you get some pics of the "healthy" Otis posted. That is, if you can get him to sit still long enough! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Richard-

Great to hear that Otis is through it and returning to normal. Just couldn't respond until I knew he would be OK.

Sick dogs really get to us, don't they? We'll spend whatever it takes and do whatever it takes to help them, to the point of making ourselves sick sometimes in the process.

I guess the reason is that dogs don't have a choice in the way they are taken care of, they only have us to rely on, thank goodness Otis found you and your wife.

Again, glad to hear he's OK.

Richard,
Glad to hear little Otis is getting back to being a puppy instead of a patient. In an ealier post you mentioned if your wife had waited to go to the shelter, it may been too late for Otis. Thank goodness for you both /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Okay, it's been a few days, how is Otis doing. Just stopped in to check and didn't see an update, hope all is well!

Maybe Otis is so full of energy and keeping him busy, he can't make time to get on the computer

Right now as I type this, Otis is here at work with me. He's over his parvo and a very energetic little guy.

Took him couple days to firm up his stoole. He's eating his puppy food now, goes back to vet 1 week from this saturday for his next round of shots.

Since the wifey & I work differing times, we're trying... correction... "she has decided" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif that we want to be with him as much as possible, so, if she goes into work late, he stays at home with her. (I'm out at 7, home at 5). I get him when I get home. If she works early, rather than let him be home alone all day in his cage, I get to bring him to work with me!~! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Good thing my boss likes dogs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So, he's here with me now, sleeping next to me on his little towel.

He seems to be befrending Tubby, our other dog (and yet another animal that was abandonded out our way)

We're taking our time getting them acclimated, as Tubby has always seemed to show some sense of insecurity when the other dogs came around.

Otis perks up when you ask him if he wants to go outside, but never seems to understand what you are saying (nooooooo) when he's chewing on your slippers. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Ya know...I seem to recall promising him one good slipper chew, if he made it through his parvo.

I'll tell ya this... I had no idea cute pups like this were babe-magnets /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif... oh...the burning sensation on my left finger... (j/k, having some fun /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif)

I'll post a ocuple pics of him. This first one, is taken with a VERY cheap digital camera, I think it has 15 pixals, not 15 MEGA pix, just 15 total
