The only thing you did wrong was buy a Deere mower, you should have gone with Woods or Land Pride and saved some bucks.

Thats good looking tractor. I don't think you invested too much money into it as long as that is what you want. First off the 970 was probably one of the best compact tractors JD put out ever. The darn things are practically bulletproof. The year is in the 90's which in my opinion was some of the best years for the compact tractors. It was before they went hog wild with safety switching everything and using levers to engage stuff instead of push buttons with solenoids.
I understand the logic of making things easier and safer for people by the manufacturers but I want my tractors to be as simple as possible. I don't want to have to worry about what if I run over a stick and disconnect a wire the tractor isn't going to work. For me simple layout and construction is paramount. I'm thinking I'm not the only one thinking this because I see a lot of older tractors that have old school layouts that really seem to be holding their resale values.

Nice looking tractor and set up. Certainly a good fit for your to-do list and a lot of other peoples. My list is a bit different so I have a 5045E with 553 loader and 72" cutter for just under $30K new. But if we had to swap tractors I could certainly get along with yours and you wouldn't mind having mine.

The 970 is a Deere design, Yanmar built machine...all metal, and no aluminum castings.
Nice looking tractor. I think you made a good choice. If and when I upgrade I would also be looking for a newer "old" tractor rather than new. I think they are built better and more durable than new. I love mine but a QA, Increased Lift Capacity, and Power Steering would be nice.
