Re: Heres one for the West Virginan\'s/and friends

I'm planning a fishing trip to WVA next month. Anyone have any suggestions on a good stream? Looking to escape crowds and just fish with my sons. I would prefer a stream to a big lake. Could camp out or would prefer to use lodging facilities, hotel/motel. Can get off the road a bit with my 4wd. Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Tucker County is not far from you in Va. Looking at a map look for "Black Water Falls State Park" near towns of Thomas and Davis. If you go to Davis heading south out of town just where the road starts to turn to the right and go over a bridge, "Black Water River" don't turn but go straight on the dirt road and over an old bridge. This is called "Camp 70" and anyone int the little town of Davis can direct you but it's really reasy to find. Dirt road for a couple miles all along an absoulutely beautiful river, plenty of trees, hiking/biking trails and free camping! (This is not the state park) Great Trout Stream that is stocked regularly in the spring and fall. Many sites to see, Very nice store with West Virginia artists/crafts in Davis, good restaraunts, etc. This is near Timberline Ski Resort. So you also have Motels etc. about 10 miles south. Enjoy!

Re: Heres one for the West Virginan\'s/and friends

Maine was also "created" out of another state. We were annexed by Massachusetts /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif until 1820. That always struck me as odd, because New Hamster (another original colony, as was Virginia) divided us geographically. I'm told the first building built on the Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick, ME is called Massachusetts Hall, as it was named after the colony it resided in at the time. It has indoor wood shutters with firing ports at the bottom, as the original residents of the era also had issues with their visitors putting up houses just anywhere /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. I asked my Dad where we came from when I was little, and he said that my Mom's family came over from England, and his family was there to greet them.

I'm not sure why we became independent from MA at the time, but it appears we are selling ourselves back a few acres at a time! Sorta kidding /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Can anyone name the original 13 colonies?

Re: Heres one for the West Virginan\'s/and friends

Roughly from north to south:

1. Massachusetts (including Maine)
2. New Hampshire
3. New York (including Vermont)
4. Connecticut
5. Rhode Island
6. Pennsylvania
7. New Jersey
8. Maryland
9. Delaware
10. Virginia (including West Virginia)
11. North Carolina
12. South Carolina
13. Georgia

You will note that Vermont also falls into the category of "States created from other States."/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Heres one for the West Virginan\'s/and friends

Some of us were talking about becoming a maritime province of Canada, next. It's good to shop around, but we're sorta liimited with our options, sticking out up here like a hitchhiker's thumb.

Nice list. I got down to Virginia, and figured it should go a few more down the coast, but I forgot my states.

Re: Heres one for the West Virginan\'s/and friends

Cranberry River in the Cranberry Wilderness area, about an 18 mile long or more(I believe) wilderness with lots of hiking trails etc along the river. No motorized vehicles allowed, only horseback, bicycles or hiking permitted, some native trout and a Black Bear wilderness, they have a major wetland nearby called Cranberry Glades with boardwalks to walk through and view the plants that grow in the wetland,a lot are native to Canada and grow and survive here because of the elevation.Located near Richwood WVa.
