I know people who hoard canned goods and ammo. The canned goods expire and who do you shoot the ammo at?
Canned goods are usable long after the printed date.

As I read that reco, if things get really bad, you may need the ammo to defend your stock of canned goods.

And, excess ammo can be bartered for just about anything once the gov't issued currency is worthless and society has broken down.

Would you like to trade some ammo for some soup?
BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!
Mmmm. good soup.

People are living in a fantasy world if they think there's going to be some kind of orderly barter system if society collapses.

I sure don’t lose any sleep over your scenario.

I prefer to eat frozen vegetables, but like to keep a month's worth of canned and dried goods on hand, stored in my kitchen cupboard. Every year I would cull out items with less than an 18 month expiration date and donate them to the USPS food drive. They haven't had a food drive since the beginning of Covid 2 years ago.
Last fall I noticed that several cans of string beans had started leaking, even though they were barely past their expiration date.

About the time that society digresses to the point that you need to protect anything you have with a gun; property ownership as we know it will be non existent. What you have is what you can take and keep with any means you can find.
I don't think that I want to live in a world like that.

People have watched too many Mad Max movies if they think communities would not organize for their own security.

Yep. I have faith in my neighbors to gather round and defend our resources.

Two things that concern me.

1. The literally tens of thousands of city dwellers that are forced to come to the country to get something to eat.

2. When things get bad enough that my neighbors gather round to harvest my assets.

Canned foods are mostly water. I have a nice selection of dried stored foods. It may take a couple days to cook up beans, but you won't starve. I have several kinds of beans, lentils, split peas, corn meal, corn flour, wheat flour, steel cut oats, oat flakes, potato flakes, onion flakes, dried milk, bouillon, egg powder, jerky, and dried seasonings stored. That's not a survivalist thing, it's just how we live.

I've told this before, but hey.....

Back right before Y2K I was picking the last of the veggies out of our garden. I asked my neighbor if he wanted some? He jokingly asked "Won't you need that for Y2K?" and laughed. To which I replied "All I have to do is keep you fat and happy." and gave him one of these looks...
