On property I have bought, there is an old house foundation made of hewn sandstone blocks. The blocks are approximately 3-5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet tall. They are in good condition. Every one who sees them says I should sell them as they are a going thing. Problem is, they don't know who would buy them! Is there any particular craft or business area I can look to to see if they are interested? If not, I plan to use them myself to make some retaining walls on the new property. Thanks in advance.

Jim,

You might want to search the classifieds in your local papers or post a classified yourself. This definitely is a niche market. You might also want to do a search on the internet to see if there are any businesses out in cyberland looking for material like this.

I have similar stones, not the block like stones you have but field stones remaining from an old hog barn and tenant house that were removed a long time ago. Fieldstone walls remain. They look great. I'm trying to figure if there's something I'd like to build on these foundations. If not, I'll likely use them to build up my stone walls around the property. I like old fieldstone walls /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. BTW, you will definitely need a well built tractor to handle those blocklike stones with the dimensions you specify. They must weigh a couple tons each. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I just got a price of $250/ton for sandstone pavers, direct from a quarry about 90 miles from here. I don't think that included delivery. I've checked other places and that was a good price so far as I can tell. Other stone pavers have been twice that, and real stone for walls runs similar prices from what I've seen. You might get an idea of value by pricing one of the fancy block wall systems at Lowes or someplace. That is, how much would it cost to build a wall the size your stones would make. Then, since you have real stone which I would pay a premium for, you could advertize them for that in the local paper, assuming they weren't worth more to you for your own use.

I wish I had some stones on my property. A friend bulding near me ran into a sandstone ledge while digging his basement. He gave me several nice chunks to use for making raised flower beds, etc.

I'll probably end up keeping them for work around our new land. As for getting them out, I'm blessed with a father-in-law that has both a JD 'hoe and a JD Bulldozer. He was already getting a little worried that he couldn't play around and get them out with his toys............

Rocks of the size you mention are great for landscaping and aboretum use. I have been lookiing all over for a source of large rocks and stone for my arboretum. You are blessed.

Try contacting masons (as in bricklayers - not the ritual variety) in your area. I had part of my barn foundation reworked last winter (granite, not sandstone) and I can tell you good rocks ain't cheap. On the other hand, Ive got tons of not-so-good rock that I would be happy to give away.
