Tractor
2014 KUBOTA L45 T.L.B. SERIES W/3-PT
Hello all. I am looking around at tractors and thought this would be a good place to learn. New York state area. Have some experience with an old 9N. Have run JD loader/backhoes, a couple of Kamatsu track hoes or excavators, Gehl skid steer, dump truck, etc. over the years. Am looking for a used tractor that has good power but can not afford to spend a lot of money. I have been looking at a Long 460DT, I really like it. But after reading some information I found on the internet about them and talking to the owner, I am going to pass. It is in good shape, but I am not a mechanic and there is no dealerships around here that know them well. Not a lot of people that know that brand. Been out of business for a while. To bad. They look like a strong, well built tractor. And sound like they are reliable. But I am going to go with something a little newer I think. I am looking into something of at least 30 hp with a loader. The older, larger tractor/loader have a lot of power, and I like that. I do not want to buy a "toy" for lack of a better word. Not bashing the smaller ones, but need a little more power. The smaller, newer tractors would do a good portion of the work I want to do, but when it comes to the heavier stuff, a larger one would handle all of it. A backhoe would be nice, but that of course adds to the cost. Anyway, looking forward to any of your suggestions. Have a good one.

Welcome to TBN!!!!

With more then 50 acres, you'll probably want a full sized Utility tractor. How much of that land do you work? And, what tasks do you have planned for a tractor?

I am not a farmer. I suppose I should have been a little more clear about that and what I will be doing with the tractor. I have about 80 acres of woods that is family owned and will be using it for the following. Trail work, bringing firewood out of the woods, moving stone, dirt, snow, landscaping, etc. Will be pulling some trailers and a mower as well. Four wheel drive and loader is a must. Backhoe would really help with the trail work and some drainage work. I suppose I could rent one once a year to get that work done though. Tough decision. Spend more money and get the backhoe, or spend less and rent one every once and a while.

Welcome to TBN.

We have found it makes more economic sense for us to rent an excavator or back hoe than tie money up in one. We have owned a dedicated back hoe.

That is a good point. And thanks. It is sort of like a wood splitter. I have considered buying one of those as well. But I can get my wood all lined up and rent one twice a year. This past year I went to rent it and it was booked the entire weekend I had off. :( But that just requires a little more planning on my part. The wood splitter however can be rented for $60 for the day. Good rate. It would be handy to have the backhoe though. The closest place to rent one is over 25 miles away. They charge you for the delivery both ways. With the way fuel is they have to. So I could be looking at a little over $400 each time I rent it. $220 for the hoe. And $100 each way for delivery. Ouch! If I rent it twice a year to do work I need that is $840. Ouch again. Or, I could try to find a loader/backhoe with a little more hours on it and a little cheaper. Of these three tractor/loaders, what type would you guys say is the most reliable? J.D., Kubota, or New Holland. I think they are all probably pretty good, but just curious. Price will be big factor. I am strongly considering a construction style Kubota like a B21 or an L35. I like the 4 post canopy and the heavier duty frame etc.

In the end it is all about economics. We don't need anything delivered and are less than twenty miles from the rental place and can get a mini excavator for the weekend for $250.

We have an old Case backhoe we bought years ago, but don't use it often enough to keep it running.

All the brands mentioned are equally good in my opinion; we own Kubota, John Deere, Case, Massey Ferguson and some old Fords.

Welcome aboard to the learning center. It would help to know your budget and whether you plan an all cash buy. Sometimes when you figure the numbers you may be better off with new, the way they sell them today and the way used holds their value. I wound up buying new after pricing used and evaluating condition and future repair probability.
