Those are nice 'buddys' to have around when in need. Just called'em spookies in 'Nam', and they sure helped to weed out some opposition a time or two.

I remember when he was just a nice little C-47.
Only question I have is how far does that big bird yaw when the cannon is fired.

I worked the Spectres (AC130) at Ubon in 70 - 71 - 72 --- at first they had 2 -20MM and 2 - 40MM but they developed the 105 mount at Hurlburt so that it fires out one troop door and recoils out the other troop door on the other side. The crews used to complain that they could kill the trucks and elephants but not tanks -- hence the need for a 105. (Elephants sometimes got in the way - they'd follow the trail and had a heat imprint almost like a truck engine.) You're right - it knocked the pilot off target initially until they developed a mount with hyd cylinders that would absorb the recoil. - The pilot had the gunsite and did the firing. ---- You've seen the cartoon with 2 buzzards perched on a limb and one says "Patience my a__, I'm gonna kill something" ? --- Spectre patch -- A 3 second burst from the 20s would put a round in every square foot of an area the size of a football field. (and probably empty the rack) The belts of 20s were racked just behind the guns - hung up - looked like they were hung up in a closet with multiple closet rods. 4 engine fighters - and boy howdy! the fire power!

From the stories I've heard Mike has it right. The tracer fire supposedly looked like a dragon breathing fire and the popular song of the time was Puff the magic dragon.
