Update
Both Chim and Bruce were right. The sideways pressure on the handle (as fitted by manufacturer) had caused the plate to bend outwards away from the pin. I straightened the plate, cut off the handle, made the notch deeper and welded on an extension so the pressure to release is straight down.
Now needs a good thump to release it but that is a lot safer than slipping. Thanks again to all for input
