After spending the past week raking up and running Shagbark Hickory husk/nuts though a shredder, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to put this in flower beds. Or, is there a better use for this stuff.

I would do a little research before doing this. I'm not an expert, but I think you would be altering the PH of your soil. This would not be good for some plants, however others are acid loving. A bit of research on the soil preference for your particular variety would be in order here.
