At the advice of a diesel mechanic friend, I switched from 40 cetane farm fuel to premium 47 cetane road fuel. Since I don't use more than 20 gal./year, the cost was not an issue.

I have a YM180D and have been very pleased with its performance but........with the 47 fuel, it runs like a new tractor!!! Less smoke, easier starting, and less RPM loss with rotary cutter in use on grades.

If you haven't tried premium fuel, do so. You won't regret it.

I noticed a difference between what we call "off road diesel" and the diesel sold for trucks , Brian

Did it run better or worse on the truck diesel? I've been buying off road diesel because it's so cheap, but at 1/2 gallon an hour I guess the cost really doesn't matter much.

I have started to use a deisel fuel additive . Power Service Cetane Boost . It increases the cetane level and also adds more lubrication to the fuel pump . In my opinion , it does seem to run cleaner (exhaust smoke) . It was fairly inexpensive and if you mix it properly it only requires 2 ounces per 5 gallons of fuel . Should last all summer !! It is suppose to help keep injectors clean too .
What do all the rest of you think about fuel additives ??

Couple posts at the old yahoo site on fuel additives - concenses was that many people use them - it's cheap and simple. Many are anti-gel as well.

should we have alot of exhust smoke.. the only time I get alot of smoke is when I really hit the throttle hard and fast then its black with just a little grey. I know what use to take me 3gal of gas now takes less than gal of deisel to mow..

Same here . The deisel uses much less fuel than the old Kolher powered lawn tractor . I believe a little exhaust smoke is normal with black smoke when under a heavy load . For the most part mine runs very clean exhaust .Don't think I could ever buy an other gasoline powered tractor again !!!

Mine burns clean unless I load it past it's ability....then it burns dense black and loses RPM 'till I reduce the load to something reasonable. Then within a few seconds it is back to clean burn again.
I run automotive type premium diesel. I've tried most all the ag and truck fuel blends in the last 25 years and prefer the premium diesel. I've only used a diesel additive once and that was for a suspected sooted injector. I think it might have helped.....then again it may have simply been the new premium diesel fuel and time.
