Ah the old stick slapping around trick! Good one. You may be a tractor newbee, but you are certainly able to fix the simple stuff. The hard stuff just takes more guts to initiate and more tools to finish.
The bearings are deep in the engine, under the oil pan and under the bearing caps. If you are seeing a leak, it's probably from the oil pan gasket. I would use a 1/4" drive ratchet and snug them down. It's VERY easy to over tighten the bolts and bend the oil pan making the leak worse, so keep that in mind. That's why I said 1/4" drive as you can't get as much torque. Naturally a torque wrench would be best. Probably 15-20 ft-lb at a guess.
As you are in Ct where it gets a bit nippy, I would say to use a 5w40 in the winter and a 15w40 in the summer. Those will be easy to find in diesel grade oil. (Yes, there is a difference). You may also want to ensure you have the SUDT fluid in the transmission. 600 hours is time to change.
Now the opinion, you can use a good 5w30 synthetic for winter use too. Gas version is ok for the low strain activities (no plowing, discing, etc). The additive packages will wear out faster, etc but for a couple months it's NBD. Others will have other opinions.
