High pressure PTO water pump?

Hello folks,
Not sure I got the right place for this post.

I have started to look at getting a set up for light emergency fire suppression. I would like to have about 500 gallons and a system that puts out about 120 psi through a 1.5 inch hose that is not longer than 100 feet. True fire systems are well outside my price range and all the water wagons I see are either abused, dont have enough pressure or are too expensive.

I have been looking for a high pressure PTO pump but and not seeing something that makes sense. Am I better off getting a gas powered pump hooked to a water trailer or trying to go the route of a pto pump(if they exist)?

We have a 1-2 acre pasture that dries up in the summer that is between us and the road. We have already had some kids smoking/lighting illegal fire works/etc that has started small fires that I put out with the box scraper. I am looking to not repeat those experiences and was noodling on something along the lines of what I described above.

If this has been discussed before I did not see it so please point me in the right direction if it has.

I'd think response time would be critical for this application. I can't see unhooking whatever is attached to the 3-point and hooking up the pump as allowing you to get to the fire quickly enough. Or are you thinking of dedicating the tractor to this duty for the season?

Most brush fire trucks use a standard gas powered transfer pump and a 1 1/2 hard hose on a reel. The nozzle needs to be able to fan spray. Most grass and brush fires are put out by wetting the area in front of the fire. Our brush fires here are not like the fires in the west that consumes thousands of acres. A disc Harrow is excellent at making fire breaks in fields to put out fires. I 've been to alot of brush fires in my 20 plus years with our rural fire department.

when I worked for railway we used what ministry used which is a Wajax 2 stroke gas pump. that thing would sing and what light enough for one hand of a really good man.

I am trying to get this rig to do more than one thing. Water an arena for the riding horses and light fire suppression.

If I could come up with a rig to do that then I could find a tractor to connect to this as a single purpose. The current tractor would stay connected to the drag or a different implement, such as box scraper, as needed. I hate to disc up the part of my pasture and the owner of the parcel next door wont do anything on his property.

Perhaps I am asking to do to much and I am better off just going with a stand alone pump rather than a pto pump

I used to have a big pto water pump. I think it was 4". Sold it for a song at an auction. What you need isn't that big. Look at surpluscenter.com under water pumps. They have a hydraulic driven pump, or you could rig up a belt drive from pto on some of their other pumps. With 500 gals you're going to want it on a trailer I would think. If you have the hydraulic power that's what I would do. With a separate engine it may not start when you need it.

I would think that this 6 roller pump with 21GPM discharge rate would suffice to put out a grass fire. That would be 100 gallons in 5 minutes so in 25 minutes of fire fighting your tank is empty. If you cant put out a grass fire with 20 gallons per minute, then you need to be on tractor with a disk cutting a fire break.

I put a 250 gallon tank on my Land plane and a gasoline powered pump for the same purpose. It does a great job of watering around my farm (35 acres). I have had a couple of close encounters with brush fires and needed something that I could hook up fast and go-my own fire engine. I think a pto driven roller pump would be the best setup so you don't have to worry whether or not the gasoline engine is full of fuel, going to start right away, etc. I have a quick hitch setup and leave the tank mounted on the land plane so it would only take a few moments to get hooked up but the pto pump would be more reliable. I had a little grass fire start last year and only had a shovel so I couldn't get away to get the right equipment. needless to say I spent the whole afternoon chasing a little line of fire that I couldn't get ahead of to stop. Now I have a fire truck of my own. I don't want to ever have to do that again.

when I rebuilt my sprayer which was pull type unit, I mounted the pump on the frame and used a PTO shaft. I could hook that up in seconds, just a few mins. back up to it prop the pin through the draw bar and pull the pto shaft and clip on the shaft on the tractor and was ready to go,

I had it set up for a single hose for fire protection, never had to use it, but I would consider the possibility of piping some nozzles to the front of the tractor and side and so one could just drive along dousing a flame in grass, (our local fire departments on there pick up sized grass trucks have a set up like that)

I had a wildfire come thru this area earlier this summer - Watermelon Hill Wildfire. Luckily it missed my property by about 1/4 mile. It completely changed my perspective on wildfires. There is no way in Hades I could muster up sufficient equipment to fight something like what I experienced. I now maintain a fire break - a strip of green vegetation - that I water - its 100' by 650'. I have installed a somewhat permanent irrigation system that will keep this strip watered from mid summer - when it dries out - until later this fall when everything is wet from rain or snow.

I have a stand alone, 15hp, high pressure water pump and 500 feet of discharge hose. Believe me, if a wildfire should come thru my property, it will burn along with everything else as, hopefully, I am long gone.

My primary solution to wildfires - good insurance and the ability to quickly move me & my dog to an alternate location until its all over.
