black smoke coming out of muffler trying to start no luck
Sounds a little puzzling

- does it seem to fire on one cylinder or fire occasionally, but not enough to run (even rough/unevenly) by itself?
I'm wondering if some water has got through the filters and into injectors - could have damaged or blocked their nozzles.
Annette, we need you to help us with as much information and detailed description as you can provide - it reduces the chances of mistakes causing unnecessary expense. I'm not at all familiar with this specific engine, but have considerable general diesel knowledge.
How long was it running and working before it stopped?
Any idea of how old the fuel is? (Sometimes, but not always, old diesel becomes contaminated with what we refer to as "algae" which creates all sorts of havoc - usually requires a comprehensive clean-out from the tank to the injectors ..... don't stress yet!).
Also, did it just suddenly stop, begin running increasingly unevenly and finally splutter to a stop, or just become more and more "tired" over several minutes and then finally stop?
During all this time, was there any exhaust smoke (aside from your mention of black smoke when trying to restart it), if so what colour?
Were there any unusual engine noises?
Could it have been overheated - was there sufficient coolant in the radiator?
Was any water found in the fuel filters?
Any idea how old the fuel filter(s) are?
How long have you owned it?
Have you used it much/frequently?
Have you had any previous trouble similar to this situation?
Keep us posted!
