not to play with snakes. Now a girl in his school will loose her arm. I hate copperheads. Article here about the dummy in Pottstown PA.

May lose her arm (according to POLICE) -- too bad they didn't get a DOCTOR'S opinion.

A 17 year old boy should know better than to bring a snake to school in a box.

In an area that does have snakes that have the potential to kill you if you are bitten young people should be educated to identify which ones are harmful, and be advised to stay away from all of them.

I hope the girl recovers from this without any complications and that all have learned a lesson.

I grew up in the southern suburbs of Philly. Pottstown is not to far. Valley Forge were he cught the snake is reasonably built up except for the National Park. I would not have expected to see a copperhead in those parts. Maybe the kid did not know it was venomous.

My daddy always said to treat all snakes as if they were poisonous, all guns as if they were loaded and all my elders with respect. He said failure to do these things could possibly end your life.

I think they may have a different 'copperhead' than we have. Our copperhead is something like 16" and has a blunt tail. I was visiting with somebody from up north (I'm thinking it was Missouri) and he swore that his copperhead was like 4 feet long and colored differently plus being more poisonous than ours....???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Tillerkiller, our copperheads do get as long as 4 feet in central Texas. Here is one that size that was waiting for us on the side of the trail. It is is looking at the camera so the head is not very clear in this picture, but it is definitely longer than 16". /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Huh!?!

You made me go look up copperheads, and there are FOUR /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif different copperheads. I'll be darned, I would have thought that different snakes (especially poisonous ones) would not share the same name to avoid confusion. The picture of the broad-banded copperhead does not look like the copperheads that I have seen either, mine were more silver/grey/copper (hard to explain the color, just mix them all together) with no visible markings, with a blunt tail.

YUCK! Pictures of snakes!

The dog in my signature had the pleasure (NOT!) of being the only dog that our vet had seen that got bit by a copperhead in the past seven years. He had no upper lip on one side (the flap of skin was mostly there but the lip was gone), and his nose was crooked for about two years. You can't even tell anymore, but I am sure that he remembers what a copperhead looks like!
