After downloading the handbook on welding on another thread(thanks !), I started thinking on a related topic.
Does anyone have any links to any related topics on the very early histories of welding?
I bet it will be some interesting reading material.

The earliest I know about was the old blacksmiths. They heated both pieces till molten and pounded them together. That is how the iron bands on wagon wheels were made at the joint. They heated and rapid cooled to shrink them on tight. Damascus steel for swords and later gun barrels were made in thin layers heated till almost molten then pounded together. If I remember rightly Damascus had layers of thin copper interleaved to enhance ductility and flexibility.

Yes that would make a great study, have to check Amazon books.

Barely mentioned in the Welding History Timeline posted above, but I have been interested in Friction Stir Welding for some time now. Unfortunately, not practical for the hobbyist, it is a relatively new method with no consumables.

that's similar to ultrasonic welding for plastics, rub materials together until they bond..

If anyone every gets to Fab-Tech they always 3-4 companies doing stir welding. It's amazing on aluminum.

Yes, first time I saw it was at Eclipse Aviation in Albuquerque about 15 years ago. They were welding aluminum fuselages... fascinating.

I used to have a sample coupon of 6 different metals all stir welded together in a row.
