Hobart 135

Wasn't familiar with the Miller unit you have and looked it up. :confused2:

*Definitely* out of my price range! Very nice unit. Would probably be a shame to limit yourself to 110v on that Miller if you didn't have to.

If you are not aware, the manufacture's "suggested retail price" is way overpriced. I got mine at the local welding store for about 2/3 of the list price.

OTOH, the "add ons" such as tank, helmet, gloves, wire, etc. added quite a bit :(

Yeah. I'm trying to play ignorant and am excluding all of the "add ons" when I'm calculating my meager budget. If I try to count everything in, I'll never be able to jump in.

When I bought my welder I had a used welding helmet given to me. So all I bought was the welder, welding wire (just one roll for what material I planned to use), welding gloves and welding pliers. After I had the welder and money came up I started adding more and better items (auto darkening helmet, welder cover (to keep dust off of it), clamps, magnets...). Just jump in as cheap and as basic as you can and expand as your able and get an idea what you actually need.

I'm going to hold strong to your advice as there are so many products and soooo little money!

Since you are happy with the results of your 110v Mig why dont you buy a 110v inverter stick rod machine. They run up to 150 amps and 1/8" stick rods. They are a little pricey for non-chinese stuff, but some folks here have the Everlast and like it and I under stand the pricing is pretty good.

After 10 years my Hobart handler 175 wire drive motor failed. I bought the new handler 210 at TSC and it's a great machine for what I need. I can weld 3/8" in one pass and with my old handler I welded 5/8" a number of times with no issues. The new 210 is interesting because you can run on 110 or 220v. I have always run argon / Co2 mix and have only broken one weld. It's $1000 out the door so cheap it is not but if I get another 10 years out of it I will be happy. I also like that the 210 is setup for a spool gun right out of the box. I have wanted one for aluminum for a while. I will be happy to have another way to do aluminum then TIG.
