I have been doing some research and can't seem to figure this out.
I have a Lincoln Idealarc tig 300 300(single phase). Recently, I was given a Hobart Rc200 (three phase) with a 17 feeder on it. I don't have access to three phase.
I have considered building a single phase to three phase converter but I'm not sure what Hp motor to use to produce enough to run the Hobart.
Or is there a way to get the Hobart feeder to run on the Idealarc?
Thought maybe someone might know.

Chuck

I'm not sure. It's pretty old. How do I tell if it's cc or cv? Will it work at all if it's cc only?
Can I run the hobart on a rotary converter?

It says right on the face plate variable voltage. Which equals constant current / CC.
I'll bet that feeder takes something like 24-volts to power it. And being as the Lincoln is CC only, you'll be pretty much stuck with running gasless flux core wire.

I've read where a phase converter to run a welding machine has to be huge!

Thanks for the help. Guess I just sell the hobart.

Sell the Hobart and buy a used LN-25, and get a K-126 gun for it. There is nothing wrong with gasless fluxcore wire. I've run a few pounds of it.

The Hobart feeder would fit on a Miller or Thermal Arc CC/CV power supply. Lincoln and ESAB have always been different.

You can run it on a Phase Converter if you have one. Not the best 3 ph out put but a lot of people do it. The feeder would be easy to sell and the power supply has a lot of Copper in it. Maybe more that the unit is worth. The Lincoln will not take a regular feeder. It's a monster tig stick unit. It could take a voltage sensing feeder like LN22 or 25, Hobart Hefty etc.

That's actually a fairly new Idealarc TIG 300 because it has a different case than the older TIG 300's. I'd guess from the late 80's to 90's. No, the Hobart 17 feeder won't work on it. The 17 was a very good feeder in it's day as were most Hobart machines. That machine looks about the same vintage. I'm not sure if the 17 feeder runs on 24 volts like a Miller or not. I think it might but needs to run off a CV (constant voltage) machine. Lincoln run on 42 volts I believe. I think you'd need a huge phase converter to run a welding machine. Maybe a welding supply would take the Hobart on trade or sell it on consignment? Then you get something like a Millermatic 212 or 252 and have good MIG machine.

Thanks for the advice. I might try a phase converter, just to see if it will run. I have a line on a 15hp three phase motor. I might try it.
Occasionally I run into three phase equipment that is cheap. I know a RPC would run a mill or a grinder. At least I could justify building one.
I'm also going to look into the suitcase mig units.
