Hi Y'all

I'm looking for input on what types of handgun holsters you use while doing tractor and other work. My carry gun is a small framed .45 ACP. Thanks!

A shoulder holster works and doesn't get in your way.

I just ordered a crossdraw holster from Pyle Holsters for my XD40 Springfield.

I really like the SafariLand ALS holster systems. It securely holds the weapon in the holster until the "button" is used to release the weapon. The hand gun will not fall out when held in the holster and the holster is held upside down. ALS is really aimed at the Law Enforcement market to prevent a weapon being taken from an officer. It just happens to also secure the weapon so that it will not fall out of the holster when doing work.:D

There is a suede lining in the holster to prevent scratching of the weapon. This is good and bad since the suede does prevent scratches but if the suede gets wet and the weapon is left in the holster the weapon could rust. If the holster does get wet a few minutes with a hair drier can easily solve the problem if the holster cannot be left alone to air dry minus the weapon.

SafariLand has quite a few holster models, I just picked this on as an example, Model 6378 ALS® Paddle Holster | Safariland.

Sorry, I don't need a gun while mowing digging, or moving snow...I'm just saying...;)

You don't have coyotes where you live?

Or wild dogs or worse, wild people, trespassing on your land with weapons.

We have more suspicious people show up at our house in the country than EVER showed up in all of the years we lived in the city. Strange how that happens. People ignoring gates, private road signs, and no trespass signs. Why would these people show up at our house? Why do some of them go to the BACK door? Things that make you go hmmmmm...

I have mine on me all the time so don't have a off person solution for the tractor yet if I did it would be for a .22 rifle not a pistol but that's me.

However if I was to need something I would probably buy a cheap nylon one with a thumb break or flap and attach it to the inside of one fender with a couple small bolts.

My concern about the idea is all the dirt that could get into a pistol while not covered by a shirt or jacket on your person it would have to be pretty well covered by a flap etc and still I doubt it would be very effective but could be wrong?

Thank for all of the input. Compact, I'm happy you live in a place without coyotes, wild dogs, and trespassers, but I don't. I have all three. Since my wife and I don't yet live at the farm it's inviting to trespass. I've had two encounters this year with individuals who got an attitude when I told them to leave and not come back. We also have a significant wild dog problem. Thus, I've decided to be proactive. I plan on carrying the weapon on my person so I was hoping there might be a holster I wasn't aware of that would afford at least some protection against dirt and other debris. Thanks!

The problem with a Tractor Holster is that the weapon is on the tractor and not on you.

I have never had a problem with dirt when carrying a pistol. I have done quite a bit of work carrying including mowing, box blading, using the back hoe, chainsawing and splitting wood. I just keep the pistol covered up by a shirt. The holsters I have used over the years have NOT been covered at the top either. Most of the dirt is going to just sit on the top of the pistol. Pretty easy to wipe off at the end of the day. The pistol gets fired at least once a year and then cleaned. The pistols I have carried can take quite a bit of dirt before they have function problems. I have never had a problem with them. I have put up to 400-500 rounds of dirty ammo in a day and not had a problem.
