JD 770
I just called my local JD dealer and they said a 20 amp alternator for my 770 in >$300.

Does that sound right?

Any suggestions on where to price check them?

Might have to take it in to be rebuilt?

Thanks in advance
Bill

If you buy from Deere, that's the price.
I'd look for a local alternator repair shop though...shouldn't cost too much for a rebuild.

Sounds about right for John Deere. New Holland wants $278 for a small water pump for tractors, TC35, TC40,TC45, TC48, TC55. :confused2:

Thanks for the quick replies. I will take it off tomorrow and take it in for a rebuild.

I'm not surprised! A new starter for my 83-420 garden tractor (20 HP Onan) lists for over $400 from "Mother Deere"! :(

In case you overlooked it (or forgot), its not that the parts are expensive to get or make, its caused by the simple fact that your money isn't worth what it used to be relative to the foreign currency of the manufacturer.

Anyone care to explain to the nonbelievers why this has happened? We are now a Third World nation in the Manufacturing Sector. Wait until you see what a loaf of bread costs in 10 years. (Hint: Buy wheelbarrow stocks).

OK, now go out and buy another Grey Market tractor...

I seriously boubt the alternator is bad. I have never replaced one of these style unless the bearings go bad. Usually any charging problem is the regulator/rectifier. Or you could have a broken wire or connector.

The alternator in our 2000 Ford Escape is going bad, dealer said $480 to get a new one put in. I'm looking for a re-build shop.

Don't get me started on the fact that you used to be able to replace a diode, then at least the diode pack, and the voltage regulator was also a separate piece.

Some rebuild shops will sell you the diodes/brushes/regulators you need for a home-brew rebuild if you can't get them somewhere else. Bearings should be easily available. The only thing that might be difficult is cleaning up the slip rings/commutator. I've rebuilt a number of starters and alternators this way and just used some crocus cloth on the armature with long-lasting results. It really isn't too hard to rebuild an alternator, if you can get the parts.

It is seized up.

Thanks,

Thanks,

if it's the bearings they will have numbers on them, bearings are pretty well a standard item

when an item is designed that uses bearings , they look for standard bearings that will fit

Every community has at least one alternator shop. Unless it is completely destroyed, they can rebuild it for much less than the Cost of New.

Find a local rebuilder.

I replaced my 40 amp with a 55 amp alternator. Don't know if the 770 can use the 40 amp. If it can pm me and we'll talk.

Water pump for a JD 4000 is 290.00!! Steiner has one for 99.00. I kinda feel guilty, I want to buy local, but 290 VS 99 is a know brainer!!

The 20 amp alternator on my 455 shelled the front bearing last year. I was able to match the bearing number at the autoparts store. $10 later I was back in tall cotton. It took longer to remove and install it than to replace the bearings.

So a quick update. The alternator was rebuilt(what ever that means) locally. It cost just over $60

One thing I noticed I thought was odd, is that it does not spin smooth but I am not sure how to describe it. Almost like it has speed bumps in there???

When the magnets pass the coils there should be some resistance. They is what creates the voltage.

The only thing that went on my 770 was the bearings in the alternator, took it apart and matched up the bearings at NAPA, reassemble and back in business.;)

Don't buy a new alternator until you at least try to have it repaired.

(BTY, it was an easy repair)
