Fellas i was considering buying a heavy 5ft disc harrow to go behind my tafe di35 (235 Massey ) and after looking at the quality and price I believe I am going to build my own. I have located 2 sets of disc wing gang from a large folding international disc . Each gang consist of 6 22" disc bells on 9" spacing and weigh approximately 400lb each. My plan is to run them in a single offset tandem configuration held buy a chanel iron frame and 3pt hitch. Your thoughts on it

An offset disc is hard to pull. I have two 8' ones in my life. I have big tractors in my life too, that pull a 16' regular disc easily. 8' offset the tractors have a time with those.

I can see no problem with your 2-WD compact tractor pulling two (2) gangs with 22" diameter pans.

If you configure your build at offset disc angles, the output behind your disc will be conspicuously rough. If I understand your configuration correctly, you intend a "bog plow" configuration but with the pans set at a more extreme angles. More than one pass over the land MAY not be a reasonable expectation due to roughness.

(( A four gang configuration at offset disc angles would stall your tractor.))

Each gang consist of 6 22" disc bells on 9" spacing and weigh approximately 400lb each.
At "swept back" offset disc angles your completed implement may not cover your tractor tire tracks. Consider this factor. (You have not specified precise disc gang width.)

I will also express concern that an angle iron frame could not withstand the torque of draft force resistance and might pretzel quite early.

Generally and offset disc is a primary tillage tool, whereas an tandem disc is a secondary tillage tool. Primary tillage such as moldboard plows and offset discs are meant to break the ground, and secondary tillage such as tandem discs are to condition the already broken soil.

Offset discs have larger blades 26-32" in diameter, compared to 16-22" for tandem discs. Offset discs larger blades allow them to penetrate deeper in the ground and the offset design makes them pull harder.

Your concept of using disc wings to make a 5' offset style disc but with tandem disc penatration should work. However the forces at play will require a much stronger frame than channel or angle. You will need some good box framing to prevent the disc gangs from bending the frame up bad. Depending on your soil conditions you might struggle pulling it, however I think you will most likely be able to pull the disc your planning on building. However the seed bed will not be as nice as a tandem disc. You will have ridges and furrows the width of the disc up and down the field, due to the design of the offset. This is why you have the double V shape on a tandem, it makes for a nice relativily smooth seedbed. To prevent ridging they will often put smaller disc blades on the very outer parts of the gang.
