Home built 2x72 belt grinder

THanks, I really enjoy seeing what people create out of stuff that most of us consider to be junk. The animals are very creative, but I like the flower stands and bird feeders the best!!!

The top roller is hinged and adjusts with a setscrew (set bolt? :) ). Once I got the motor and drive roller aligned, I was able to move the belt back and forth on the rollers by adjusting the top roller.

PHPaul, I am assembling stuff to make a grinder following your example. I like the low cost Surplus Center rollers, and the overall approach is simple and inexpensive. So, any advice now that you have had it for a while? Many thanks!

Yes.

Do something better for the drive roller. It works okay, but it doesn't run true enough to keep the tracking consistent.

Good enough for cleaning up corners and burrs and such for welding (which is my primary use for it) but precision grinding (ie, knifemaking) is problematic.

I built a copy of it for a friend using precision rollers from ebay which he absolutely loves and runs as smooth as silk. Of course, that added about $400 to the price tag. He also went with a 3 phase motor and a VFD, so he's got a bit over $1000 tied up in it. But then, he's a knife maker so the price of precision was fine with him.

I finally figured out a way to chuck up the flywheel/pulley from another treadmill motor and plan to turn the grooved belt pulley section down to 7/8" and mount a better (CNC machined and crowned) drive pulley on it, paying particular attention to getting it to run true.

Here's a link to the build showing some of the differences: Grinder, Version II

If you go back to the Shop Projects page from that link, you can see some videos of it in action.

I'm working on a belt grinder project as well. It's based off a Hammond double end polishing lathe that I got for free. It has a 5hp 1ph motor and uses 2x154" belts. The contact wheels are 16" in diameter and a pair of Truex 410 backstand idlers. I've got the grinder running and the project is now the point where I'm fabricating the rests. I've never made a knife, but I'm really looking forward to trying it on my lawnmower blades.
