Has anyone built 4wd tractor by using engine with front wheel drive as power and transfer case ?-such as chev citation ,then connecting drive-axles to conventional front and rear differentials ? any potential problems ?

a friend of mine had done that on a few home built tractors and mud bugs.Some times you h may have to turn your axles upside down and put in a new breater on the tops side of the axle to make it run the right way. another thing is to weld the spider gears yup so you have power going to both axles. The first tractor my friend Jimmy built like that had alot of trial and error building involved.

no I have not done one, but I may be doing somethign similar some day as my brother has an old rotted out chevy diesle 4x4 which broke down on my place about a year ago, he pretty much said jusnk it or what ever he won't fix it any more. I'm thinking of fixing it and making a woods drag truck. has good trans & engine, bad power sttering. it FELL OFF! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif most of ths shock brackets rusted away and I had to keep refixing / welding them up for him and the tanks leak like a sieve... I'm thinking simple tank in bed area rip off existing bed and make flat bed with tow hooks for attaching a small a-frame and hoist sortta like a wrecker, this way it lifts front of logs up and adds the log weight to truck for traction, weld up rear spiders and leave fronts as is. re-hook all the 4x4 stuff back up as drive shaft was removed. it would be a winter project if ever I do it...

Which works better-automatic or standard trans. for trans-axle ?

Either works pretty good and automatic would be easier linkage wise. A manual may be tougher but again with the further gear reduction of the axles an automatic would do fine. My friend Jims first ride that was built like you described was a 501 Caddy motor and transaxle.

I am collecting parts to build a log skidder tractor similair to your idea using 2 ton axles linked together by universal and powered by chain drive from the tranny.....clear as mud????

Hey Don Ive been hid lol. I just let go of a nice GI transfer case. A loger here thats runnin old timber jack skidders here had one disembowel itself. I tried to buy the little skidder but he insisted on keeping it. I think I found a better transfer case from a Gamma Goat.
