Definitely looks like a bearing block to me.

One of those things where a heavy duty roller would be very handy but could never justify spending money on something used so little. Well after talking and bartering with few friends I was able to gather the materials needs to put this thing together with no out of pocket cost. I will more than likely spend a few bucks on painting it once the weather warms up though. The roller consists of a old 300 gallon propane tank welded up with a fill/drain added on one end. Some angle iron, square tubing, channel, and pillow block bearings. The roller is aprox. 9 feet wide and weighs aprox 300 to 400 pounds empty and I'm guessing 2500 to 3000 pounds filled full of water.
I hate to sound dumb but what do you use the roller for? We have about 10 acres of grass that a neighbor cuts for hay. It is clay and quite rough. I thought about getting a roller several years ago to see if I could smooth it out but after doing some reading I was afraid that the compaction it caused would negate any benefit I gained from rolling. I would like to revive the rolling idea if I could do it right and not do more damage than good.

Thanks for the response and advice. I guess the rolling idea goes back on the shelf. We own a small horse stable and there is a 2.5 acres grass eventing field that takes some pretty serious abuse from the horses. I will use the roller on this field which is really like a part of the lawn and will roll parts of our huge country lawn. Would I use it on horse pasture and hayfield? I probably wouldnt for I have both pastures and hayfield that are relatively smooth.
