There's a lot more room in a 2 X 6 wall for insulation, wire, piping and all the stuff that gets crammed in walls these days. Plus it's stronger. I think 2 X 6 is R19 and 2 X 4 is R13.
By the time you drill a 2 1/2 inch hole to run a 2" pipe through a 2 X 4 there's not much left.
I like 2 X 6 much better, but it's not required by code in most cases unless there is a special structural need or an insulation requirement.
