Mad, thanks for the info. Will get the name of the delivery guy from my B-I-L tomorrow. I think in the long run this would be the easiest way to go.

Only only thing thats not the same is the price - the price today for home heating fuel is $1.86 per gallon. The price for diesel is 2.86 per gallon.
Thats todays prices (subject to raise or fall instantly).....I wonder why so much of a price difference that is? LOL

Every fall My fuel oil man tops of my 300 gallon in ground tank and then I get him to fill my fuel cans;) Its for off road, so no taxes hence much cheaper than @ the pump... I just got a notice from him that they are now selling gas for home delivery:cool: but have not inquired as to the price or quantity required .... But boy it would really save me a lot of headache toting 30 gallons in cans several times a season while someone in line behind you patiently  waits for the pump...

Might just be able to time all the gas powered vehicles and gas cans simultaneously??

I picked up a new, well one time filled with hydraulic oil and then drained, steel barrel at my local JD dealer for free. The barrels were labeled, stored under cover and all bungs tight with only a dribble of clean hydraulic oil on the bottom for me to clean. Closed head steel barrel, I took two. 0$.

I picked up a rotary hand pump from HF. It mounts to the big bung in the barrel head and takes 80 easy cranks to fill the 5 gallon jug with diesel from the barrel. I added a 10' piece of clear PVC hose to the pump since it only came with a spigot. 11$ for pump, 10$ for tube and plug.

I fill both barrels with 30 gallons of off-road diesel at my local fuel depot. It is red and I don't pay road tax plus I think the price is more competitive. High turnover at the fuel depot with their underground tanks being filled once or twice daily with new diesel fuel. Safeway price this last fillup would have been 3.29 per gallon, OffRoad price at depot was 2.14$ per gallon.

You can do the math to see the huge savings here. Beyond just money savings is the huge convenience factor of having 60 gallons of fuel available 24 hours a day in my shed.

It is one thing if I had a diesel pickup and could just fill my 5 gallon jugs when I get truck fuel but I drive a gas engine truck and it means a seperate trip to get diesel fuel at a station. Yes the fuel would be fresher but I have had no problem with 3-4 month old fuel. I add a dose of Powerservice to each 5 gallon jug that I fill with off-road diesel.

It is very red like blood.

I bought the same plastic barrel as MadReferee and the same Harbor Freight hand pump as Highbeam. Only difference is I have to go to the service station to fill it up. California #2 diesel is about $2.89 now and I don't qualify for an Ag license.

I converted a dolly so it would fit in my Blazer and strapped the barrel to it. I unload it with the fel bucket...roll it into the bucket off the tailgate. The 30gallons or so lasts me about 2 to 3 months so I add a little Stabil to the barrel. When I pump it into the tractor, I add the appropriate amount of Power Service and then pump the tank full. I've been doing this for a year and no fuel problems at all doing this.

N80,

When I checked on delivery of farm deisel they would provide a rased tank and deliver the fuel when ever I ran out. They had a choice of 250 or 500 gallon tanks. You can likely find someone to deliver if you are in farming country. But down here (maybe nationally) the fuel delivery trucks are taxed all the same rates, no matter size. So it does not pay for people to run bobtails when they can pay the same for tankers.

Two years ago i installed fuel (diesel) at my shop. I purchased a 330 gallon home heating fuel tank, gauge and a 15 gpm fuel transfer pump from northern. The tank and pump ran about $700. One fill up will last us 4 to 5 weeks. On average we save 20 to 25 cents per gallon over station prices at exxon/mobil. The savings is great but the convenience is awesome. Always having diesel on hand for trucks & equipment is the way to go!

Time is money. When I was farming, I had a 375 gallon diesel tank and a 225 gallon gas tank. At times it was far cheaper per gallon than station "pump gas/fuel" Other times there wasn't nearly the price break it took to cover buying a tank, pump, nozzle, and meeting our county's fire code for above ground fuel storage. (The fire code never stopped changing :( )

But there was NEVER a moments doubt that the time I saved by not having to haul fuel was worth every penny of the cost. At times with any business, be it farming, lawn care, or just making widgets, there's not enough hours in the day. Saving a few minutes can be the difference between getting a job done and NOT making a deadline.

Up here in the cold country( central Ontario) they deliver one type of furnace oil if you have an inside tank, another if the tank is outside. The outside fuel(stove oil) is the same as everyone runs in their skidders( no road tax). I fought with 5 gallon tanks for my JD for 5yrs until my BIL gave me a used 100gallon furnace tank( there are old 200gal tanks all over the place but I didn't want 12months of fuel at once). Cleaned up and painted the tank, installed an old lever pump with new 15' hose from TSC. 25 strokes and I'm done. The fuel oil man will top it up whenever he delivers furnace oil to the outdoor house tank....Shoulda done it years ago!
