Home Depot and Lowes online ordering/in store pick up junk

I ordered about $3000 worth of shingles from my local Lowes. There were a couple of bundles that had been opened and were a few shingles light. Worse, the shingles had been taken out and put back in the package all facing the same way, so they were stuck together and unusable. There were also a couple bundles that were the wrong color, which I didn't discover until I had them up on the roof!

The worst part was when I went to return them, which was a total pain because the bundles weigh about 80 lbs each. They treated me like a criminal because some of the shingles I was returning didn't match my receipt and the rest were unsellable! I did talk to a manager who made it right eventually.

In fairness to the delivery guys, in either my local Home Depot or Lowes, if you were to go to the shelves and pick up 50 of anything, odds are at least two of them would be the wrong item and two of them would have been opened and damaged.

I sometimes order from the local lumber yard. They are much better in terms of making sure that every item they deliver is usable, if you order 100 2x4's you'll get 100 usable 2x4's. Which makes sense since they deal with professionals who won't put up with getting slipped culls. However, they don't offer online ordering. Sometimes I can get them to take an email from me, but most of the time I have to call in orders. Which leads to errors too, even the email order the salesman has to type into their computer.

I'm waiting for Amazon to get into the construction materials business and crush them all!

I will have to return a 250 foot spool of 10/3 copper wire to Lowes, since the jacket had several punctures in it, and that's not acceptable for underground feed wire. Problem is, we had about 150' of the spool rolled out and laid in a ditch before the damaged section became visible. Not looking forward to that return at all -- I have no doubt it will be a hassle and I will probably need to talk with a manager to get my money back. Cost me a day of time and availability of the electrician too, so I'm already getting reamed....

My wife works at the local hardware store, so I can get wire cheaper thru her than at Lowes, and Lowes/HD is cheaper than the local electrical supply house. I had the same thing happen with a 100 ft roll of 10/3. Unrolled about half of it and found issues with the damaged jacket. Luckily for me.. I just gave it to her to replace the next day and I was only out my time.
