Our clothes dryer stopped working 2 weeks ago. Drying clothes by the heat of the wood stove. So the house is festivally decorated with garland and laundry.

Took the dryer apart and it was the belt as expected. The dryer is a 15 year old Kenmore. Thisis the first thing to break. Can't complain about that. Went to 2 hardware stores hoping they would stock dryer belts like they do for lawnmower belts. No such luck. The next step would be a trip to Sears.

Ugh!! It is the weekend before Christmas and Sears is at the mall. Figure I would stop by the new Home Depot. They don't sell them but I get a business card - "HD appliance parts and accessories ordering hotline". The clerk says they have almost all parts and ship overnight.

I have the original manual which includes a parts diagram. Call up the HD hotline, give them the belt number and 3 seconds later she tells me they have it. Wow. They'll ship tomorrow and I get it on Tuesday.

I was duly impressed. This has got to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I certainly will keep their number handy.
And to thing I try not to shop in the big box stores.

Sears has a similiar part service on-line, Sears Parts. I have had good luck finding a fan for a 20 year old dehumidifier and a gear set for a 15 year old garage door opener. Parts arrived in 3 days.

Another great on-line repair part service is Repair Clinic. They not only sell the parts, they help you troubleshoot the product and will describe the most common problems.

I've used repair clinic several times with great results... I may have to try the sears one.

Chris, that's one of the reasons I buy a number of Sears' products. Most come with an exploded view of the parts and a list of part numbers. I don't know about buying any of the parts at a Sears retail store, but I can either go to one of their service centers or order online.

I got complete instructions for removing the dryer drum and replacing the seal, belt and rollers from Repair Clinic. Great site!

I don't know what size town you live in, but most towns of any size have independent appliance parts/repair businesses that carry most common parts like belts for many brands and can order others in most cases. A good place to check if you need it today. Should be listed in the Yellow Pages.

I needed Maytag dryer parts. The local parts dealer (and used appliance sales), was cheaper than the discount online parts stores. And they had the parts! They are located in an old shack of a house that is crammed with old appliances. But they have a computerized parts system, so looks are deceiving.

There is a store in Washington Pa, called Dependable Electric. They have yet to fail in having a part I needed, ranging from belts for lawn tractors, washers and dryers, to thermocouples and elements for hotwater heaters. They usually don't even need a part number, just tell them what you need, and the specifications of the part, and they seem to have the part you need. It has become the first place I check when I need a part for something.

Yeah, repair clinic is pretty cool...

I followed their instructions to troubleshoot our gas dryer... ended up replacing the solenoids per their procedures.

Then, a few weeks later, I used their instructions to change an ice maker in our kitchen refrigerator/freezer. Found out there are really only two different styles used in most manufacturers freezers... I had a spare frige in the basement for pop and bait that never had the icemaker hooked up to a water line. I never figured under all the plastic beautification that they would be exactly the same units. Swapped them out with their instructions... it was a snap.

We also have a local parts supply house that seems to have ever part for every appliance ever made, plus gas grill parts. They've been around since I was a kid and have expanded to several cities in Indiana. I never knew thay had a web site, but took a chance and typed it in. Ha! Should have known better... Everybody has a website these days! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The only thing I don't like about the Sears Parts website is the shipping and handling. But....I use it too. Order parts 24/7 and get them in 3 days at my door step. They have exploded views of the parts and machines. Recently needed a manual and a belt for a 20yr old sewing machine I inherited. Manual was no longer available there, but I had a new belt in 3 days. Have gotten numerous parts for my Craftsman LT4000. New venturi for the water softener. All without having to leave the 'puter. Found a copy of the manual for the sewing machine on the 'net for 10 bucks. Got that too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
