Joining clamps together is a trick that I know about but often forget, thanks for the reminder.
I have found that the gene pool answer is probably close to the truth when it comes to the "Big Box" stores. I too have found that the stores often vary from area to area. Another thing that I have discovered is that when the store changes managers the new manager completely re-arranges the inventory so I have to start all over learning where things are. I also agree that the stores staying open late and opening early is one of the major positive things about them.
Wish I had one of each in my immediate area so I could have a few different options.

You know that's an interesting point. I have 3 HD stores in the vicinity that I can use, and each of them is laid out differently! I have to wander around the aisles trying to figure out where a certain item is that I know the exact location of in another store.
That said, I've also found that the helpfulness varies greatly between stores, along with stocking requirements. One of the three stores is almost always out of stuff, the other two almost always have all of what I need. It does come down to the local manager, IMHO.......

Remember the dollars you spend in your local store are taxed with the taxes going to your local economy. I would rather spend a little more at the local store knowing the money is much more appreciated than to go to a big box who don't really care. I have a nut, bolt and screw wholesaler about 1 mile from where I work. If I go in needing just one or two of something they say "We'll get you the next time". I go in there often enough they recognize my face but not often enough for them to rememeber I haven't been charged for anything in a long time. I do use them for bulk purchases like of decking screws.
