Home electricity from solar and/or wind

/ Home electricity from solar and/or wind #11
Goeth toeth, DSIRE: DSIRE Home they have lots of information of tax incentives and solar stuff.

Regarding net metering. In some states the power you sell back to the grid is at retail rates while in other states the power company pays wholesale. You have to check for your state.

The last time I ran the numbers it does not make money sense for us even with the state and federal rebates. I keep reading that a system will cost 5 or 6 dollars a watt and I have read of higher prices. So a 5,000 watt system is $30K. I think NC and the Feds will pay up to 2/3s of that price it still would take us 10 years at a minimum which is not really bad. But I would have to come up with the 30K to install which is where the money sense comes into play. :D That and how the tax refund for NC is done. See below.

Solar hot water heating is the bigger bang for the buck.

I would NOT get all of the money back from the state the following tax season. It would take a couple of years. NC state gates how the rebates are done. They give you 35% of the installed cost back but up to a limit for solar power which is $10.5K But the maximum one can get back in one year is HALF of your state taxes. So if you paid $2,000 in state taxes you can only get $1,000 back in a year. I think they will let you keep taking the credit until you get the full amount owed but it could take awhile.

The increase in property tax in NC is limited by law. So you have to check for your state. The DESIRE link should tell you.

Later,
Dan
