I lived in Germany for a total of about 10 years over 2 tours and tried my best to sample every beer brewed there. I don't remember if I succeeded or not.

But..........you haven't tasted horse pee until you drink beer brewed in Okinawa. I think it was called Orion.

You've traveled a long way to find horse pee. All you had to do was come to Texas and get you some Lone Star.

Try a smooth amber ale like Sam Adams Boston Ale. It's a nice easy transition from lagers. Before long, you'll notice that lagers have no flavor and you won't go back. I'm not much for stouts, but I sure do like those amber ales.

In Belgium we say: There are no bad beers, you just got to find the ones you like. I'm not sure this is also true in other countries (about the bad beer that is /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif).
Finding the ones you like may be a very pleasant occupation, and for those doing so, cheers!

Wonder if that's as tasty as "Tiger" beer we had in Taiwan. It was quite humorous how the group of German businessmen reacted when the beer they were drinking (San Miguel, I think) ran out and the waitress brought out the Tiger stuff. One sip, and all the glasses were pushed to a lonley corner of the table. One of them said to the waitress, "you can take this away".

By the way, I'm not hinting at any parallels between hippies and home brewers. It just happens that my hippie friend is also a home brewer. I may poke fun at his hippie ways, but he and I are really great friends. He brings me back to the real world when my capitalist ways get out of control.

I think most of the North American beer is good when your intentions are to have more than you probably should. The micro-brew and imported stuff is better when you actually want to taste something good. I like a lot of different types of beers - Tuborg, Grolsch, Newcastle Brown, Guiness, Kilkenny to name a few. My favorite right now is Bass Pale Ale. An Irish friend of mine told me to try something: "Pour yourself a glass of Murphy's stout. Drink a quarter of it then fill it back up with apple cider - you shouldn't hate it." Wow - definitely try this if you can find some Murphy's.

You can probably find lots of perry recipes on the web. Try The Cat's Meow. I haven't had any real perry, only pear flavored cider. With cider, a bitter component is part of the flavor profile most folks go for. This is from the tannins present in some apples more than in others. I would think that perry made without at least some high tannic apple, or maybe crab apple juice, might be a bit on the bland side.

I made some killer cider a few years ago from juice I bought at the vineyard. The apples were Jonagold, and I added some frozen Granny Smith juice to get a bit more acid in the mix. Came out real tasty.

Now there is a thought, Chuck, add some Granny Smith concentrate! GS is my favorite apple to eat out of hand so if pure pear is too bland that is a good idea. Hmmm maybe cran/pear?

If you're into the stronger brews, you can also add honey to bump up the alcohol. I forget the name for cider with honey, but I imagine there's a special name for perry with honey too. A brewing friend of mine keeps bees and lately has gone almost completely to meads and wines because he thinks the hops or carbonation of beer don't agree with his sensitive digestion. Apparently alcohol does him no harm because some of his meads will light your fire with one glass.

P.S. The only problem with the frozen concentrates, and maybe many supermarket apple juices, is that they are supplemented with vitamin C, ascorbic acid. Perhaps there's not enough to affect the taste of the cider, but it bugged me that I couldn't find any frozen juice without it.
