I have a desire to make a double barrel handgun. It will only be used to shoot snakes (Rattlers - killed 7 last year). only shell will .22 short or possibly rat shot.
Probably start off with a single barrel, then the double. If success is high, might even build a "Pepper Box" six shot some day, for .22 ca. shorts.

Nothing pretty or fancy, something that will not be a big loss if lost or destroyed. It will hang out with my 'Snake Shovel", perhaps in bad weather at times.

Any one here done something similar or have / or seen plans for something like this????

Note I no longer have a metal lathe (2 were stolen), so it will all be done with hand tools, small drill press & hand held grinder.

My Dad once sold steel wire rod to Lakefield Arms, I believe. He once showed up with a handfull of 22 gun barrels. That would have been a good place to start. I gave them away a few years back. Had fantasies about building a gatling style gun. I'm just not that talented nor ambitious!

Why not drill out a cheap starters pistol? But why a 22? I'd want a 12 gauge at least. Years ago, I was in PA. A guy had a 10 gauge pistol and a 410 gauge antique walking cane. Either (or both) of those would do too!

Nothing more reprehensible then merely injuring an animal you intended to kill!

I hate (and fear) snakes, but have adopted a different attitude. Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean I have to kill it!

It needs rifled barrels to avoid being an illegal short-barreled shotgun.

Build your own is ok, just be sure to rifle the bores or better yet look at pre rifled .22 barrel liners from brownells

a 12 or 410 shot gun would be more effective. but I dont want the noise or power. Killed 3 with a pump bb rifle this year, but is awkward in close spaces.

Also used NAA mini revolvers are usually fairly cheap used and nobody shoots them much so never worn out.

If money is no object, this would be my first choice!

for a hand gun that is going to be abused money is an object - as is registration.
Don't need that on a pretty much junk throw away type gun.

With shots of 2 to 4 feet I don't think it needs to rifled. Wrong?

Would be nice to find some premade barrels.
